Star Wars fans continue to engage in fierce debates about the sequel trilogy, but there is one point on which the majority of fans agree. Fans generally agree that Kylo Ren was one of the best parts of the sequel trilogy. There were certain parts of his arc that fans disagree on, but there's no denying that Kylo Ren was one of the most engaging and compelling parts of the newer films.

Adam Driver did an incredible bringing the character to life and channeling his inner conflict. As both Kylo Ren and Ben Solo, the character committed some unforgivable acts, but he also suffered greatly and is worthy of sympathy.

10 Hated Him: Murdered Han Solo

Kylo Ren kills his father Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Han Solo will always be one of the most beloved Star Wars characters. Kylo Ren made everyone hate him when he committed patricide and killed Han.

Han wasn't the father he needed to be for his son, but he did try to make amends in this moment and help his son find a way forward. This forgiveness and dedication for a fresh start was repaid with murder.

9 Felt Bad: Nearly Killed By A Kitchen Droid

The novel Last Shot revealed a traumatic incident that Ben Solo endured as a young child. When he was left in the care of the kitchen droid BX-778, the villainous Fyzen Gor reprogrammed droids all around the galaxy to harm the humans around them.

This programming caused the kitchen droid to pick up little Ben by the neck with the intent to mortally harm him. Han Solo helped stop Fyzen Gor and the programming was undone, but it was terrifying to see little Ben nearly killed by a normally friendly and reliable kitchen droid. This incident surely instilled some of the distrust toward authority and caretakers that Ben would carry for the rest of his life.

8 Hated Him: Ordering The Village Massacre

The Force Awakens wasted little time proving how cruel and ruthless Kylo Ren could be. After murdering Lor San Tekka and taking Poe Dameron captive, Captain Phasma asked what should be done with the Jakku villagers and Kylo Ren commanded that they all be killed.

These were villagers trying to just peacefully live their lives and Kylo Ren ordered that they be massacred in one fell swoop. Kylo Ren is a tragic and empathetic character in many ways, but ordering the village massacre is an action that can never be excused.

7 Felt Bad: Almost Killed In His Sleep

Luke Skywalker sensed the darkness growing in his nephew. After everything Luke sacrificed to save the galaxy, he couldn't imagine the thought of it being plunged into tyrannical darkness once again. In a moment of weakness, Luke stood over Ben, ignited his lightsaber, and contemplated killing him to save the galaxy from this darkness and destruction.

The moment of weakness passed and Luke was flooded with shame for even considering it, but the damage was already done. Ben woke at the sight of his uncle standing over him, seemingly ready to kill his nephew, and Ben thought he had no choice but to defend himself.

6 Hated Him: Invaded Rey's Mind

Kylo Ren interrogates Rei in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Regardless of how Rey and Kylo Ren's relationship developed, there's no denying that he was downright creepy and invasive when he interrogated her in The Force Awakens. He told her, "You know I can take whatever I want" and proceeded to invade her mind.

As he invaded her mind, he spoke of how she was lonely, desperate to sleep at night, and would give him whatever he wanted. What he didn't count on was how Rey would resist his power, delve into his mind, and grow stronger from the experience.

5 Felt Bad: Abused By Snoke

Kylo Ren was constantly abused by Snoke. He was told on many occasions that he was weak, cowardly, and nowhere near as powerful as his grandfather Darth Vader or his uncle Luke Skywalker. Snoke even flung his apprentice off a cliff at one point during their training.

After the events of The Force Awakens, Snoke belittled Kylo for being "bested by a girl who never held a lightsaber" and he said Kylo was "just a child in a mask." The abuse turned physical as Snoke electrocuted Kylo with Force lightning.

4 Hated Him: Choosing Power Over Rey

When Snoke told Kylo Ren to kill Rey, he chose to kill Snoke instead. Kylo and Rey banded together as they fought and defeated Snoke's Praetorian Guard. It seemed like he and Rey were on the same page and were united in combatting injustice and creating a better future for the galaxy.

Instead of choosing a united path with Rey, Kylo chose power instead. He wanted to "let old things die" and seize the power before him. Rey offered him a better way forward, but he chose to become the Supreme Leader of the First Order and gave in to the dark side.

3 Felt Bad: Talking With The Memory Of Han

In a moving scene that mirrored their fateful meeting from The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren spoke with the memory of his father Han Solo in The Rise of Skywalker. He was ready to cast aside his Kylo Ren identity and become Ben Solo again, but he couldn't move on without the forgiveness and blessing of his father.

It was emotional to see much of their dialogue repeated from their scene in The Force Awakens, only this time Han was able to reach Kylo as he cast aside his red lightsaber and reclaimed his identity as Ben Solo. It was heartbreaking to see how much he regretted what he did to Han and that in this moment, Han was the person he needed most.

2 Hated Him: His Actions During The Battle Of Crait

Star-Wars-Last-Jedi-Luke-Kylo-Ren

After choosing power over Rey in The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren went down an even darker path during the Battle of Crait. He led a ground assault in which he nearly defeated the Resistance once and for all, including his mother Leia.

When Luke Skywalker appeared to arrive, Kylo ordered all of the First Order's weapons to fire at his uncle. When Luke still stood there, Kylo went to confront his old master one-on-one and did everything in his power to kill him. Luke's Force projection allowed him to outsmart Kylo Ren and give the Resistance the time they needed to escape, but those lengths only needed to be taken because of the destructive decisions Kylo chose to make.

1 Felt Bad: Sacrificed Himself

Ben used Force healing to bring Rey back to life. In doing so, he revived Rey, but he also sacrificed his own life force. Ben felt it was the right thing to do, but it was devastating to lose him so soon after he found redemption.

The losses and sacrifices of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa hurt even more with this turn of events. They all sacrificed themselves to save Ben and help him embrace the light side, and despite all of that, he too ended up dead.
