DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda 3" has grossed $149 million in China, becoming that country's biggest animated film of all time.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel slipped past the previous record holder, July's "Monkey King: Hero is Back," on Sunday morning. Directed by newcomer Tian Xiaopeng for just $16 million, that film went on to earn $144 million.

"Kung Fu Panda 3" has brought in $128.5 million in North America. The three films in the franchise have grossed a combined $1.6 billion to date.

THR notes the strong performance in China is particularly important to DreamWorks, as "Kung Fu Panda 3" is the first release under its Oriental DreamWorks venture, formed in 2012 with two state-backed Chinese companies.
