SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "Light-Years from Home," the Krypton Season 2 premiere.
One of Seg-El's longtime allies just turned traitor. In "Light-Years from Home," the Krypton Season 2 premiere, Mama Zed betrayed Nyssa-Vex and the rest of the rebellion against General Zod. Her motives were not clear, but the devastating result will affect the rest of the season to come.
As established in Season 1, Mama Zed raised Seg's friend Kem. She appeared as a maternal figure in the show's debut season, offering advice to her fellow rankless. She even broke the news of Rhom's death to her daughter Ona when Kem couldn't. As such, the characters implicitly trusted her, which made her choice all the more surprising -- and painful.
Mama Zed was the one who informed Nyssa that her father Daron-Vex had returned to his home Bokos. Nyssa wasted no time in finding him, leaving her son Cor-Vex in Mama Zed's care. However, Nyssa walked straight into a trap. Lyta-Zod and her Sagitari army ambushed them, killing Daron and capturing Nyssa.
In her new role as turncoat, Mama Zed also handed Cor over to General Zod and Lyta. When Nyssa was brought before Zod, she found him cradling Cor in his arms. He threatened to raise Cor as his own son if Nyssa didn't convince Val-El to halt the rebellion, leaving Nyssa with a devastating choice.
Nyssa wasn't the only one betrayed by Mama Zed. Mama Zed led the Sagitari back to the rebellion's hideout. "You must understand, I had no choice," she said, voice quavering. "Sorry!" For her efforts, the Sagitari shot her in the back, killing her. Val-El and the others fought back and ultimately escaped. They headed to Wegthor, Krypton's moon, in hopes of keeping the rebellion alive.
Since Mama Zed admitted she "had no choice," she was likely strong-armed by Zod in the same way Nyssa was. Since she acted as a maternal figure for Kandor's rankless, Zod would have many hostages to pick from. Considering she was killed before she could explain, though, we may never know why she turned the rebellion over to Zod's rule. However, the ramifications of her actions have landed Nyssa in dire straits. The rebellion -- and the fate of her son Cor-Vex -- now rests in her hands.
Airing Wednesdays at 10 pm ET/PT on Syfy, Krypton stars Cameron Cuffe as Seg-El, Shaun Sipos as Adam Strange, Georgina Campbell as Lyta-Zod, Elliot Cowan as Daron-Vex, Ann Ogbomo as Jayna-Zod, Rasmus Hardiker as Kem, Wallis Day as Nyssa-Vex, Aaron Pierre as Dev-Em, Ian McElhinney as Val-El and Blake Ritson as Brainiac.
