Why Krypton Uses Adam Strange Instead of Booster Gold

Krypton has plans that extend well beyond the doomed locales of Superman’s homeworld. The series’ inclusion of Adam Strange, for example, plays up the use of time travel within the series. But while the initial announcement of the obscure character excited many of DC Comics’ faithful, other fans questioned the choice to use him as the series’ time traveling hero instead of the much more recognizable Booster Gold. This query has now been answered by Krypton executive producer Geoff Johns.

“[O]ne of the great things about [Adam Strange] is that his core story is that on Earth, he just kind of blends in — he’s an average man,” Johns recently explained to IGN. “But when he travels via this Zeta Beam to another planet like Rann, he becomes this hero. He finds the hero within him. And so that conceit and the Zeta Beam technology plays into why Adam Strange specifically is able to travel from Earth present day to the past in Krypton.”

The DC Comics CCO later added that Strange’s everyman characteristics also provide a perfect dichotomy compared to the massive task lying before him. “[H]e’s an unlikely hero,” Johns said. “He’s the unlikely choice to shoulder this burden of trying to stop someone from the present from destroying Superman’s legacy.”

Created by Julius Schwartz and designed by Murphy Anderson for Showcase #17 (November 1958), Adam Strange is the human champion of the planet Rann in DC Comics canon. He has been a member of the Justice League, R.E.B.E.L.S. and the Seven Soldiers of Victory, typically sporting his signature ray gun and jet pack.

Krypton stars Cameron Cuffe, Georgina Campbell, Elliot Cowan, Ann Ogbomo, Rasmus Hardiker, Wallis Day, Aaron Pierre and Ian McElhinney. The series will officially debut on Syfy Wednesday, March 21.
