The anime KonoSuba-God's Blessing on This Wonderful World, which debuted in 2016 and lasted for two seasons, tells the story of hikikomori shut-in Kazuma Sato, a boy whose entire life revolves around anime and video games. He is killed in a traffic accident and wakes up to find a beautiful goddess named Aqua that offers to transport him to another world. Sato agrees, and upon being told that he can only take one thing to this new world, chooses to take Aqua with him. Thus begins Sato's perilous new life as he fights to survive and defeat the greatest menace to his new world, which is the Demon King. Megumin is a sorceress that is hired by Sato to aid him on his quest, along with a swordswoman named Darkness.

This new Isekai will be based on the KonoSuba spinoff light novel series, KonoSuba: An Explosion on this Wonderful World!, which was written by Natsume Akatsuki and illustrated by Kurone Mishima and stars the character Megumin and her Crimson Magic clan. Although the main KonoSuba anime was produced by Studio DEEN, the spinoff will be produced by Studio Drive. It will be directed by Yujiro Abe, who also directed episodes of the show Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. Makoto Uezu, who was in charge of Series Composition for Seasons 1 and 2 of KonoSuba, will also be in charge of it for the spinoff. Rie Takahashi will star as Megumin, while Aki Toyosaki will co-star as Yunyun, another member of the Crimson Magic Clan that is both a close friend and rival to Megumin.
