After Shoko Komi took care of a sick Hitohito Tadano in Episode 18 of Komi Can't Communicate, she made the bold move of holding his hand while he was unconscious. The moment was, of course, ruined with the arrival of Najimi Osana, who witnessed the whole thing and even teased Komi about it. As a result of being "caught in the act," Komi spent the remainder of the winter break stressing over how to justify her actions The first story of Episode 19, follows up on the aftermath of the hand-holding incident.

On the final day of winter break, Komi is struggling to figure out how to communicate her bold actions to Najimi. The first letter she writes provides an in-depth explanation of her actions, except it ends up making her look like she did something inappropriate, which is grounds for more teasing from Najimi. After spending her entire night thinking about it, she ultimately explains her actions as “I was checking his pulse.”

When Komi encounters Tadano that morning, she is unable to greet him as she normally does. This is largely due to her contemplating the possibility of him being awake at the time she held his hand. She feels embarrassed by this thought and opts to ask him if he's recovered from his cold.

Tadano wants to believe she's asking about his cold because he visited him while he was sick, but decides to assume she's referring to his accidental phone call. When he asks what she did afterwards, Komi runs off to the girls' room to shake off her embarrassment as she now thinks Tadano might have been awake when she held his hand.

On Tadano’s side of the situation, he’s recovered sufficiently from his cold to return to school, but is not sure if Komi really went to his house. Part of him thinks he hallucinated her being there due to him having a high fever. He is also unable to verify her presence as Komi left behind no receipts the way Najimi did. At the same time, he doesn't want to be rude and thinks he should thank Komi for taking care of him if she did show up at his place.

While Komi Can't Communicate Season 2 has been mostly showcasing the budding romance between Komi and Tadano, at the same time the series is consistently establishing they're not ready to cross that bridge together just yet. The recurring pattern between Komi and Tadano is that despite having feelings for each other, they both still need to overcome their communication barriers.

More specifically, they need to get comfortable communicating honestly with each other, which requires a higher degree of emotional vulnerability. Until they start being honest with themselves about their feelings, and feeling comfortable expressing that, they'll never truly be ready to pursue a romantic relationship.
