The following contains spoilers for Episode 13 of Komi Can't Communicate, "It's Just the Arrival of Winter," now streaming on Netflix.

After a three-month hiatus, Komi Can't Communicate is back for the spring 2022 season with new friends debuting, old friends returning and sweet romance blossoming between the two leads. The story follows the life of first-year high school student Shoko Komi, who lives with extreme anxiety. She struggled to make friends as a result, which in turn caused her to develop a communication disorder. It's not until she meets Hitohito Tadano in Episode 1 that she starts making progress on that front.

As Tadano was the first person to identify that Komi has extreme anxiety, she confided her struggles to him and told him of her desire to make 100 friends. Tadano decided to assist her with this goal by becoming her first friend and introduced her to his childhood friend Najimi Osana. Through Najimi, Komi befriended many of her classmates, including Himiko Agari, Omoharu Nakanaka and attracted the frightening obsession of Ren Yamai. As the series progressed, Komi found herself falling in love with Tadano, and toward the end of Season 1 he began reciprocating her feelings. It is here where Season 2 picks up.

Within Komi Can't Communicate's timeline, Komi and friends have returned to school for the winter semester. As the most outgoing member of the group, Najimi greeted Komi with a frozen hand to the face as a friendly, but childish prank. Feeling somewhat inspired, Komi herself repeated the prank on Tadano, but was careful not to let him see her as the culprit. This indicates that she wants to progress her relationship with him but remains too shy to express it. This isn't the only time she drops hints of her romantic attraction, however.

In a later scene, when Komi and Tadano are taking their midterm exams, Komi drops one of her pencils on the floor -- but as per the school rules, she cannot retrieve it herself. She knows she has to ask her teacher to pick up the pencil for her, but her anxiety prevents her from doing so. Komi tries to carry on with the exam but to her misfortune, the lead breaks and falls out of her pencil, which exacerbates her anxiety even more. Luckily, Tadano is sitting next to her and doesn't take long to realize what her dilemma is.

In an effort to help Komi, Tadano purposely drops his own pencil near hers, just so he can request the teacher to retrieve both of them at the same time. His plan succeeds as the teacher is able to identify Komi as the owner of the second pencil on the floor, given she is the only student who doesn't use a mechanical pencil. While Tadano is happy to have helped Komi, the relief is short-lived. The moment he thought about Komi's quirks, he accidentally drew a line on his own test. When he attempted to erase the mark, he realized he didn't have his eraser with him.

While Tadano is internally panicking, Komi surprisingly notices he's in distress. More interesting yet, she's able to "read the room" and figure out that he doesn't have an eraser. This prompts Komi to return the favor by breaking a piece of her own eraser and purposely dropping it on the floor next to Tadano, just so he could once again ask the teacher to retrieve it. This act of kindness doesn't go unnoticed by Tadano, who is then unable to concentrate on the exam -- along with Komi. At the end of the day, Tadano finds himself more enamored by Komi to the point of not letting his sister use the eraser she gave him.

Despite Season 2 of Komi Can't Communicate having only just begun, the first episode alone establishes where Komi and Tadano are in their relationship. More specifically, their storyline is starting to transition from a close friendship to a romantic one, which will doubtless be the primary focus moving forward.
