Filming is officially underway on Benoit Blanc's next adventure, the as-yet untitled Knives Out 2.Writer/director Rian Johnson announced the news by tweeting a photo from the movie's set in Greece. "Aaaaaaaand WE’RE OFF! Day one of filming on the next Benoit Blanc mystery," wrote Johnson in the accompanying caption, adding, "Thanks to all the lovely patient people here in Greece for letting us do all this murdering on their peaceful shores."RELATED: Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Why Rian Johnson Cut the Movie's Alternate Opening

Knives Out 2 is a sequel to Johnson's 2019 hit Knives Out, a quirky whodunnit starring Daniel Craig as Mr. Blanc, an eccentric private detective who's called upon to investigate the curious death of the wealthy mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey. Much like Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot novels, Johnson's plan is for each movie in the Knives Out franchise to focus on a new case involving Blanc and a different set of characters -- as opposed to following the continuing story of the Thrombey clan and the writer's former nurse Marta Cabrera.

As a result, Craig is the only Knives Out cast member slated to return for the sequel and the already-developing Knives Out 3. Joining him in Knives Out 2 are Edward Norton (Motherless Brooklyn), Dave Bautista (Army of the Dead), Janelle Monáe (Antebellum), Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision), Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami), Kate Hudson (Marshall), Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks) and Jessica Yu Li Henwick (Iron Fist). For the time being, however, their roles are being kept firmly under-wraps.

In addition to being a critical success, Knives Out grossed $311.4 million at the global box office against a $40 million production budget. Hoping to build upon this, Netflix acquired the rights to Knives Out 2 and 3 for $450 million in March. The plan is for Johnson to write and direct both sequels (like he did with the original Knives Out) while at the same time drawing from a budget as big or bigger than the one for his original film.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Knives Out 2 stars Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc, with Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline and Jessica Yu Li Henwick in undisclosed roles. The film does not yet have a release date.
