WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Marauders #16 by Gerry Duggan, Stefano Caselli, Edgar Delgado, and VC’s Cory Petit.

When Kitty Pryde first debuted, she was known for being one of the youngest and most timid students of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters and the most inexperienced member of the X-Men. Since then, she's gone on to become a teacher and a leader to the X-Men but as the latest issue of Marauders shows, the likes of Emma Frost, with who she's always been in constant conflict, and Wolverine are starting to rub off on her.

When she first arrived at the school, Wolverine quickly mentored her and it was his training that matured her past childish and spoiled ways. With a teacher like Wolverine, it makes sense that she continued to grow more rebellious to the strait-laced heroic ways of the X-Men. At one point, Kitty returned to Xavier’s school where a reformed Emma Frost was part of the team and because of Kitty’s past experiences with Frost, she didn’t fully trust Frost which led Kitty to warily watch Frost and take note of how she handled situations.

In Marauders, Emma Frost is playing even more of a role in the development of Kitty Pryde’s character. Kitty decided to go by "Kate" and adopted a new attitude towards her enemies. After traveling to Krakoa, an island where mutants have created a settlement, Frost filled her head with an anti-human sentiment. Kate was convinced to captain a ship and lead the new Marauders in protecting the mutant citizens of Krakoa. Sebastian Shaw, the leader of a version of the Hellfire Club, becomes a constant thorn in Kate’s side. With the help of Frost, Kate took control of the organization and is deemed the Red Queen. It is this feud with Shaw that proves Kate no longer cares for compassion or diplomacy and shows the malevolent person she has become.

In the latest issue, Kate proves just how far she will go to stop her enemies. After a failed mission, Shaw left Kate for dead and she was not going to let that attempt on her life go unpunished. Frost and Kate ride to Shaw’s castle on horseback and break into dole out punishment. The first thing Kate does is shoot him so that he loses his powers, and the fight becomes completely one-sided. After beating Shaw, he tries to run but Kate is determined to keep on the offensive. A brutal beatdown would be putting it lightly and even Kate’s alien dragon, Lockheed, got in on the action by clawing out one of Shaw’s eyes. After all the physical torture, Emma even poisoned Shaw turning him catatonic and prolonging his suffering even more.

It’s hard to recognize Kitty Pryde from her early days with the X-Men to who she has become now. Under the tutelage of Wolverine and Emma Frost, she retained the worst parts of them both. Wolverine, who would ruthlessly beat his way out of any situation, and Emma Frost, who was a cold and tactical manipulator seemingly without a heart. Now, as Kate Pryde, she has lost any of the compassion that was left in her. She has turned into a combination of these two mentors, appropriately sporting tattoos, drinking Wolverine under the table, and delivering justice on her terms, no matter how violent.
