"The Walking Dead" is about to extend its reach to first-person shooters again in 2016. "Payday 2" studio Overkill and series creator Robert Kirkman have announced that a cooperative first-person shooter set in the post-apocalyptic world is in the works, and will debut in 2016.

"I'm a huge fan of what Overkill and Starbreeze have been able to do with 'Payday 2.' It's just an amazing cooperative game," Kirkman said in the reveal trailer. "Because of everything they've done, how cool that game is, I'm super excited to announce that Skybound is partnering with Overkill to do a 'Walking Dead' game, and I'm happy to say that it's the co-op game that all 'The Walking Dead' fans have been waiting for."

In the game's recently-launched FAQ on Steam, Overkill stated the game would combine "elements of action, role-playing, survival horror and stealth" and will take place in Washington. Starbreeze Studios, of which Overkill is a part, will both develop and publish the game, and have a direct partnership with Skybound Interactive, effectively cutting out the middleman and, as the FAQ puts it, "have a direct relationship to our community, focusing on making the best game we possibly can together." The studio still plans updates for its wildly popular "Payday 2" game -- a cooperative first person shooter that integrates elements of robbery and heist -- and in celebration of the announcement, are offering Negan's bat as a free weapon.

While the pedigree of "Payday 2" and the tone of the trailer certainly indicate that exciting things are on the way for "The Walking Dead" co-op shooter, the franchise has been in the first person shooter territory before -- "The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct," based on the AMC television show, was a critical flop at its release, earning a Metacritic aggregate score of 34, and a user score of 3.5. By contrast, "Payday 2" currently sits at an aggregate score of 79 with user scores at 7.9.
