Jack Kirby’s granddaughter Jillian has kicked off the third annual Kirby4Heroes campaign to help creators in need.
On Aug. 28, what would’ve been the legendary artist’s 97th birthday, comics stores across the country will donate a portion of that day’s sales to The Hero Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a financial assistance to creators. (An in-progress list of participating stores can be found on the Kirby4Heroes Facebook page.)
Some retailers will also host “birthday parties” or bring in artists as part of the Wake Up and Draw events, with the illustrations to be auctioned later on eBay. According to Hero Complex, the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia will use Kirby’s work in its curriculum for two days, while the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco will host an appearance by Paolo Rivera.
Kirby hopes to raise $15,000 this year, up from the $10,000 target in 2013. Donations can be made directly to The Hero Initiative through the organization’s website (include “Kirby4Heroes” in the special instructions field). You can watch the 2014 campaign launch video below.
