Kipo And The Age Of Wonderbeast was a superb new animated series with a fearless and fun female lead named Kipo. Thanks to its new take on how the future may pan out, viewers were excited to see what was going to happen. The series’ titular hero was a fantastic lead character, who never backed out from challenges. For a 13-year-old girl who lived most of her life underground, it was extremely brave.
Once she was separated from her father, Kipo fearlessly set out on the mission to save him and their people. Besides her positive energy, fans loved all the adventures, the show's creative and fun details, and the creatures she faced during her journey.
10 She Loved Astronomy
Living underground in the Burrow didn’t stop Kipo from dreaming. Her father, Lio Oak, drew a star map on their home’s ceiling and taught Kipo all the constellations. Once she came up to the surface, Kipo was fascinated by the beautiful sky.
Fans could also see that Kipo’s father did his best to educate his daughter which helped Kipo survive in the dangerous new circumstances. Her astronomy skills also helped her solve her father's clues and help her find her second burrow.
9 Her Best Friend Was Wolf
After Kipo was forced to step on the surface and save her people, she came across a little girl wearing a wolf pelt. Kipo named her Wolf and while the two were complete opposites of each other, they bonded fairly quickly. Wolf grew up on the surface and learned she had to be alert at all times.
There was a really fun chemistry between the two— while Kipo was trusting and energetic, while Wolf was rather silent and cynical. Their strong friendship became one of the most touching and fun relationships in Kipo.
8 She Turned Most Of Her Enemies Into Friends
The series was easy to love for all ages because it had a lot of positive moments. Kipo refused to assume the worst of everyone and she actually turned around almost every relationship that started bumpily.
Right from the beginning, she was always prepared to stop for a moment and step into other people's shoes. Once she understood what motivated the others, she could find a way to befriend them. Starting with Jamack, the mob frog; through Tad Mullholland, the mind-bending water mute; all the way to Scarlemange, the most feared mute in Las Vistas.
7 She Could Sing & Play The Guitar
Kipo was a generally cheerful person and she loved music as well. Fans could see and hear her singing and sometimes playing the guitar. It was a quick release for viewers after some rather tense scenes to get back into a positive state of mind.
Kipo’s voice actor Karen Fukuhara wasn’t known to be a singer, but in this series, she proved her talent in that medium. While Kipo And The Age Of Wonderbeasts wasn't a musical animated series per se, it had many amazing musical moments and catchy songs.
6 She Had A Crush On Benson
It was a beautiful episode when Benson surprised Kipo with a trip to Ratland for her birthday. It was important for Kipo to see there were safe zones, and hope for all species living together.
Benson and Kipo had a great time at the amusement park. On the Ferris wheel, she confessed her feelings about Benson and kissed him, to which Benson surprised and told her that he was gay. Kipo felt embarrassed, but this awkward moment didn’t stop the two from being friends. It was one of the best-portrayed LGBTQ+ arcs in a modern animated series.
5 She Could See At Night
Nocturnal vision was an incredibly useful ability, as on the surface no one could rest without having to worry about a possible attempt on their life. With all sorts of creatures roaming the surface, a human in particular had to be alert at all times.
Thanks to the jaguar mute DNA in her blood, Kipo had night vision abilities. It was key to her survival, and in most cases, her friends could benefit from Kipo’s special ability. While Kipo first didn't like what's happening to her at first, she grew to love the special superpowers she got and eventually she was proud of her Mega Mute self.
4 Her Parents Turned Her Into A Half-Mute
When Kipo realized that she could transform into a mega jaguar, everyone was surprised. Naturally, her friends were worried, but after she found her anchor with the blind goat witches’ help, Kipo could control her animal form.
Fans learned later that her parents were the ones who mutated her as they were trying to find a way for humans to live on the surface. With humans having mute abilities, they would've no longer been inferior to giant mutes. It turned out that Kipo was the best choice as she was always using her powers for good.
3 Scarlemagne Was Her Adopted Brother
As Kipo got to the surface, her biggest challenge was facing Scarlemange, who was terrorizing both humans and mutes. Everyone feared him as he was able to control others with his pheromones. The mandrill mute was in fact Hugo, who was turned by Kipo’s parents.
Song and Lio Oak were experimenting on Hugo, but loved him like their child. He turned evil because he felt betrayed when there was an attack on their burrow and his parents saved Kipo instead of him.
2 She Was Immune To Puppet Pheromones & The Cure
When Kipo fearlessly snuck into Scarlamagne’s palace to save her father and other humans, everyone seemed to be hypnotized. All the humans acted as Scarlamagne wished and were dancing and behaving like puppets. Viewers saw that a pink gas kept them under control, which was developed from Scarlamagne’s pheromones.
When he tried to take control over Kipo’s mind, he failed because she was immune. Towards the third season’s end, when Dr. Emilia developed a “cure” to turn all mutes back into regular animals, Kipo was injected— but nothing happened. It was clear Kipo was even more special than she seemed.
1 She Helped Mutes & Humans Live In Peace Together
Thanks to Kipo’s ambitions of finding a resolution in every situation and her ability to always see the best in others, she managed to create a peaceful surface. The beginnings were rough, but over time and thanks to a lot of effort, mutes and humans could finally live together.
It was an extremely huge achievement as both mutes and humans were afraid of the other. Even some mutes hated or feared other mutes. It was very inspiring for viewers to see how far a little goodness could go.
