Universal’s reboot of “The Mummy” may have found its Mummy: The Hollywood Reporter has word that Sofia Boutella, who played Gazelle in “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” is in talks to star in the titular role. Universal declined comment on THR’s report.
The current “Mummy” project is planned as the first in a series of interconnected monster movies set in a shared universe, in the style of Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe. Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man and Bride of Frankenstein are all reportedly part of Universal’s plans for the franchise.
Following her attention-getting turn in “Kingsman,” Boutella landed roles in “Star Trek Beyond” and “The Coldest City,” an adaptation of an Oni Press graphic novel by Anthony Johnston and Sam Hart. It was first reported in October that Universal’s new Mummy may be played by a female actor, for the first time in the studio’s 80-plus years of making “Mummy” movies.
Directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by Jon Spaihts, “The Mummy” is scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.
