The chief protagonist and hero of the Kingdom Hearts series, Sora is no more than an adolescent when his journey begins. Sora grows up as he saves his friends -- and the world -- time and time again with the help of his allies Donald, Goofy and King Mickey in this wild fantasy take on Disney characters. Now Sora is branching out again to save another world -- that of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where he joins the blockbuster fighter as the game's final DLC character.

Throughout his many adventures, Sora's greatest asset is his heart. Through the connections he forms and the strength of his bonds, he can do the impossible with some help from his friends. Sora isn't the most powerful hero in Kingdom Hearts, and his naivety sometimes creates barriers he must break through, but he's still the champion the forces of Light need.

How Sora's Story Begins In Kingdom Hearts

Riku, Sora and Kairi in Kingdom Hearts II

As a very young boy, Sora ties himself to Ventus, a Keyblade wielder left to die on Destiny Islands. Sora's young heart reaches out and makes a connection with Ventus' heart, offering him aid until he's strong enough on his own. When Sora is about four years old, Ventus is again in trouble. Sora feels Ventus' pain and reaches out, leaning on the connection the two shared years earlier. He offers his own heart to Ventus as shelter, providing a safe place for the Keyblade wielder to be mended.

A year later, a girl named Kairi arrives at Destiny Islands and soon becomes close friends with Sora and his best friend Riku. The trio spend their days dreaming of the world beyond Destiny Islands. Then when Sora is 14, he notices a storm on the eve of their long-awaited departure. In a frantic rush to secure the raft, Sora is assaulted by a tempest made from darkness. Creatures known as Heartless appear alongside the dark storm, tearing apart the islands and consuming Kairi and Riku.

Sora defends himself by summoning the Keyblade, an unbeknownst gift from Ventus. Later, he awakens in a new world, Traverse Town, and encounters Donald Duck and Goofy, who've been sent by their king to find the wielder of the "key." The three join forces to find King Mickey, Riku and Kairi. Along the way, Sora discovers his Keyblade can seal shut the Keyholes which guard the hearts of each world.

Meanwhile, evil forces have manipulated Riku and made Kairi part of a plan to open the door to Kingdom Hearts. When Sora finally comes face to face with Riku in Hollow Bastion, Riku summons the Keyblade from Sora's hands, explaining that he is its chosen wielder. Sora proves his heart is stronger and wrestles it back to defeat a possessed Riku.

Using the Keyblade Riku wielded, Sora impales himself with the weapon to revive Kairi. It works, but turns Sora into a Heartless (also creating the Nobodies Roxas and Naminé) for a short time, until Kairi's heart can restore him. After a regroup, Sora, Donald and Goofy pursue Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, who's taken full control of Riku's body and plans to open Kingdom Hearts.

Their battle results in Ansem's defeat, but the opening of Kingdom Hearts. Sora tries closing the door, but it takes a combined effort and sacrifice of King Mickey and Riku on the other side to seal the door. Sora and Kairi are separated once again as the worlds begin to restore; Sora promises he'll return once he's found Riku and Mickey.

What Happens to Sora's Memories

KH Character Lineup

Sora, Donald and Goofy's path takes them to Castle Oblivion, formerly the Land of Departure. As they progress through the castle, Kairis' Nobody, Naminé, slowly erases or alters their memories at the behest of Organization XIII. After defeating the Organization, Naminé offers Sora an opportunity to recover his original memories. Sora spends a year asleep to regain his memories and his Nobody, Roxas, is briefly part of Organization XIII before he's forced to reunite with the still-sleeping Sora.

When Sora wakes, he learns Organization XIII is actually a major threat. He and his allies head off on a new adventure accordingly and work with King Mickey, who won't reveal Riku's whereabouts. Eventually, Sora is reunited with Riku in the Nobody stronghold, The World That Never Was, and they work together to defeat Organization XIII's leader, Xemnas. The battle leaves the duo wounded and stranded in the realm of darkness, but message in a bottle from Kairi helps Sora open a door back to the realm of light.

The reunion is short-lived, however, because an old enemy, Xehanort, has returned. Sora and Riku must complete their Mark of Mastery exams to become full Keyblade Masters to defeat him. At the start of their journey, Sora and Riku are separated. Riku completes his exam, but Sora becomes the target of Xehanort's evil plan to create vessels of darkness. Sora is ultimately saved by his friends, but fails his exam.

Where is Sora Now?

Kingdom-Hearts 3 Remind

When Xehanort captures Sora, he loses most of his power and many of his abilities, so he must recover them to stand with his friends in the coming battle. During his journey, Sora Ventus and his friend Aqua, a Keyblade Master, from the realm of darkness.

Sora is one of the seven warriors of light who gather in the Keyblade Graveyard to battle the 13 warriors of darkness. At the height of the struggle, Xehanort kills Kairi in front of Sora and summons the χ-blade to open Kingdom Hearts. Sora battles and then defeats Xehanort with the help of Master Erequs, a Keyblade Master thought long dead.

To save Kairi, Sora sacrifices his entire existence. Stricken with guilt, Kairi puts herself into a deep slumber to traverse her heart's memories and look for clues about Sora, which drives the story in Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory.

Sora later meets Yozora, a mysterious new character, in the Final World. The two comment on the oddity of seeing each other before engaging in a battle on the Shibuya rooftops. For now here, Sora's fate remains up in the air -- at least in his own series. For fans of Kingdom Hearts, Sora's next appearance is mixing it up with the likes of Super Mario and Cloud Strife in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when he releases as the game's final DLC character on Oct 18.
