After thirteen years since its last numbered installment, Kingdom Hearts III topped the video game sales charts in January to become the bestselling game of the month.

Even though it was released at the end of the month on January 25, the Square Enix title sold over 5 million units in its first week, becoming the fastest selling release in the popular franchise and outperforming Capcom's enhanced remake of Resident Evil 2 which was released on the same day.

While topped by Square's Final Fantasy/Disney crossover role-playing game, the remake of the iconic survival horror game still sold over 3 million units in its first week to become the second-bestselling game of January. A strong commercial success, it may be on pace to outsell the 1998 original version of Resident Evil 2, which itself sold 4.96 million units across its entire lifetime to become the fastest selling game in North America at that time.

Not to be completely outdone, the Nintendo Switch had a good month as well with New Super Bros. U Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate both earning spots in the top five bestselling games of January along with Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
