Less than a week since its wide release on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and Kingdom Hearts III is already the fastest-selling title in the entire history of the popular video game franchise.

Square Enix has issued a statement revealing that the new game has already shipped more than 5 million units worldwide, both physically and digitally, making it an immediate commercial success for the video game developer. Across the franchise's nearly seventeen-year history, the combined sales for all twelve titles in the series are over 25 million units sold.

Launching on the PlayStation 2 in 2002, the original Kingdom Hearts combined the animation style and storytelling sensibilities of Square Enix's Final Fantasy franchise with the beloved worlds and characters from the Walt Disney Company. The latest entry sees the series' protagonists explore the worlds of Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, Incredibles 2 and more, teaming up with each setting's iconic characters.

The third entry in the main storyline and twelfth title overall, including the franchise's numerous spinoffs, Kingdom Hearts III is an early hit for the Japanese developer as it heads into the new year.
