Nancy Gribble is one of the more prominent neighbors on Fox's King Of The Hill and she's a real study in contrast. She's lovingly married to Dale and supports him, although she spends seasons cheating on him and expecting him to raise a child fathered by another man. She's a sweetheart who calls people "sug," but she was implied to be a bit of a mean girl growing up who still has a dark side. And she might be a pretty face, but she's also a career woman with multiple jobs in the media.

Naturally, when it comes to her family, there are plenty of times Nancy has been shown to be a wonderful parent. Other times, not so much.

10 Great: Not Pressuring Joseph

Dale and Nancy in Western Outfits

When Joseph's talents on the football field spark interest from a local private school, even earning him a scholarship, Dale goes off the deep end trying to impress the school's wealthy alumni. All the while, Nancy keeps a level head throughout the whole situation, not wanting Dale to spend money they don't have all for the sake of his ego.

While Dale's heart was in the right place, feeling the school could give Joseph a future he previously wouldn't have imagined, Nancy was not only being fiscally responsible, but this also suggests that she doesn't feel it's important to put too much pressure on Joseph.

9 Terrible: Keeping Joseph's Parentage A Secret From Him

Joseph is Nancy's son with John Redcorn, but she keeps it a secret from him, allowing him to believe that he is the biological son of her husband, Dale. While the situation is already complicated, playing along with the charade isn't helping matters.

When Dale eventually suspects Joseph isn't his son— although suspecting aliens instead of Redcorn— the situation takes its toll on Joseph, who tries to turn to his mother for support, only for her to near violently repeat that Dale is his father, leaving him more confused than before. Eventually, Dale and Joseph come to the conclusion that the aliens probably made Joseph using Dale's DNA anyway.

8 Great: Raising Joseph In A Stable Home

Joseph and Nancy

While Dale can come off as somewhat mentally unstable, living in his own little fantasy world— though some of his conspiracy theories turned out to be correct— he's shown to be a loving husband and devoted father. In fact, his biggest issue when it comes to Joseph is that he cares a little too much, going through extreme measures to make sure Joseph is popular or secure.

While these don't always work out, at least his heart is in the right place and Joseph knows that he is loved. Added to that, it's also implied that Nancy keeps Dale from going too far with his antics, such as the time she made him donate whatever undisclosed thing he was keeping in the basement for twenty years to a local teaching hospital.

7 Terrible: Continuing Her Affair

For the first four seasons of the show, Nancy continues the affair with John Redcorn. Dale is unaware of the situation, due to believing that Nancy only goes to Redcorn to treat her "headaches," as well as occasionally believing Redcorn to be gay.

While Nancy eventually decides to break things off with Redcorn and stay faithful to Dale, she spent years involved in an affair that could have hurt her family had it come to light.

6 Great: Eventually Ending Her Affair

When Nancy starts losing her hair, she realizes that it's from the stress of breaking up with John Redcorn. Despite this, she decides to remain faithful to Dale even if she has to wear a wig.

As a media personality in particular, her hair is important to her career. Ultimately, she puts what was morally right and doing what was best for the family ahead of her own vanity— even if it took her a little too long to finally do the right thing.

5 Terrible: Leaving Her Family For Dallas

When Nancy gets a career opportunity in Dallas, she initially leaves Dale and Joseph to their own devices while she relocates. While it could be argued that it was a temporary situation until she got things settled, when an emergency leaves Dale injured, she's too consumed with getting to be in a parade to care.

What's worse, Nancy hardly acts like a professional in her new position, backstabbing her co-workers and showing up drunk to a parade, humiliating the news station that took a chance on herself and losing her job. Financially speaking, it's lucky for the family she managed to somehow get her old job back.

4 Great: Supporting The Family

Nancy as a Reporter Cropped

While her lack of professionalism can show up at times, Nancy's job at the news station is still important and necessary for her family at the end of the day. Although Dale isn't unemployed, and his work as an exterminator is a respectable job, Nancy is clearly the one bringing home the bacon. This is especially important as Dale owns his pest control business, meaning that Nancy's salary at the news station offers some level of security.

Exactly how better off Nancy is than Dales varies from time to time, but he doesn't seem to make a living wage. One episode outright says that she supports the family while Dale pays for the cable bill; another time it was said Dale has to get an allowance from Nancy.

3 Terrible: Not Discouraging Joseph From Dating His Sister

When Joseph starts to feel attracted to a girl named Kate, who suspiciously looks like him and even sounds like he did before his voice changed, everyone realizes that the girl is John Redcorn's daughter. Even Dale quickly figures out that the girl is indeed his son's half-sister, although he once again blames aliens.

Throughout the whole situation, Nancy was more concerned that John Redcorn, the man she cheated on her husband with, was cheating on her instead of the fact that her son was about to enter into a very inappropriate relationship. It's possible that she thought Joseph and Kate were just friends, but even that interpretation suggests that she's so uninvolved as a parent that she doesn't notice Joseph's very obvious romantic interest in his own sister.

2 Great: Fighting For After School Programs

After school programs

When after school programs have been cancelled at the local middle school, Nancy, as well as Minh and Peggy, decide they have to get involved to save the programs, especially when they see Bobby and Joseph playing in an unsafe parking lot. This inspires them to fight for an open spot on the school board.

While their hearts are initially in the right place, the three mothers then start to go a little overboard with their plans, especially when they can't figure out which one should spearhead the campaign.

1 Terrible: Putting School Politics Ahead Of Children

Unfortunately, Nancy, Peggy, and Minh let the campaign get to their heads and they each decide to run individually. Caught up in politics, they even lose sight of trying to save the programs.

Eventually, the three mothers end up canceling themselves out, allowing a fourth candidate to win the position, one who ultimately cuts the after school programs and leaves the kids in the same position they were to begin with. That said, the story ends on a hopeful note with the mothers finding ways to get involved with the kids, like taking them to the museum or zoo.
