Marvel Comics has revealed the new Valkyrie that will debut during the publisher's King in Black event series.

Artist Mattia De Iulis designed the unnamed Valkyrie, who will make her first appearance in King in Black: Return of the Valkyries. Marvel's newest Valkyrie will team with current Valkyrie Jane Foster, former Valkyrie Dani Moonstar and the Asgardian warrior Hildegrande to battle Knull, the god of the symbiotes.

"When [editor] Wil Moss asked me to create a new design for a Valkyrie, I didn't believe him!” De Iulis said in a statement. "I'm so excited about this because it is my first experience in this field and I'm really honored to work on this amazing and powerful character!"

Marvel teased that this new "Valkyrie's past holds dark secrets that will change everything you thought you knew about this group of Asgardians and reveal what their future in the Marvel Universe holds." Phil Noto's cover to King in Black: Return of the Valkyries #1 featuring the new Valkyrie, along with the issue's solicitation, can be found below.

  • JANE FOSTER RETURNS!
  • Once there was an entire army of Valkyries, but now Jane Foster is the only one. When the King in Black comes to Midgard, Jane must rebuild the Valkyries to help stop him -- starting with Hildegarde, a warrior from Asgard’s own hallowed halls, and X-Man Dani Moonstar, a former Valkyrie herself. But what Jane doesn’t know…is that she never was the only Valkyrie after all. Who is the fourth warrior? Jason Aaron and Torunn Grønbekk team up with artist Nina Vakueva for a story that will rock the foundations of the Marvel Universe!

King in Black is the next installment of writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman's Venom saga. The event teases heroes such as the Avengers and X-Men coming together to stand against Knull, with Eddie Brock's climactic standoff with the terrifying villain looming in the background. King in Black is a successor to Absolute Carnage, which resulted in Eddie Brock and Venom releasing Knull from his cosmic prison, with the villain now making his way towards Earth for revenge.

Marvel has released its first wave of King in Black tie-ins, which include a team-up between former rivals Iron Man and Doctor Doom as they battle a Knull-controlled Santa Claus. January 2021's King in Black tie-ins feature spotlights for heroes (and villains) such as Black Knight, the Thunderbolts, Gwenom and Valkyries. The second wave includes Return of the Valkyries, along with one-shots and tie-ins for Black Knight, the Thunderbolts, GwenomDaredevil, Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool, Savage Avengers and S.W.O.R.D.
