WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #23 by Saladin Ahmed, Carmen Carnero, David Curiel & VC's Cory Petit, on sale now

Miles Morales is one of the many heroes dragged into the chaos of King in Black. Luckily, Spider-Man isn't with the initial batch of heroes who confronted Knull, meaning he wasn't captured and corrupted by Knull, giving him the chance to help out as the conflict grows further and further out of control.

As Miles learns in Miles Morales: King in Black #23, one of his closest superhero friends, Ms. Marvel, wasn't so lucky. Spider-Man went up against his fellow Champion and former Avenger in her Knullified form in a brutal battle. While he is able to rescue her from Knull's grasp, it comes at a very painful price for the young hero.

After encountering the Symbiotes during the Absolute Carnage event, Miles is aware that his Venom Blasts -- the bio-electrical charge he can use as an offensive tool -- are particularly powerful against symbiotes, even those directly connected to Knull. He's able to free one of the space dragons corrupted by his influence and brought to Earth, albeit at the cost of being injured and exhausted by the effort. Before he can rest though, Miles receives a distress message from Ms. Marvel and promptly comes to her aid. But Ms. Marvel has been Knullified and turned into one of the dark god's foot-soldiers -- and now is just waiting for Miles to arrive to try and corrupt him as well.

Luring Miles into a confrontation, the Knullified Ms. Marvel proves to be deadly and efficient with her powers, shapeshifting around every attempt to attack or contain her. She even comes close to catching Miles and subjecting him to being bonded with a symbiote again. His Venom Blasts are enough to briefly force the symbiote off of Ms. Marvel at least, but the alien being is able to take control of her again before Miles can rescue her. Ultimately, Miles is forced to unleash a full-powered blast against his friend and teammate, hoping that her own powers will protect her. This turns out to be the case, as Ms. Marvel is winded by the effort but able to quickly rise back to her feet, ready to fight.

The same can't be said for Miles though, who Kamala finds unconscious on the ground, still smoldering from the sheer power of the blast. It appears that the effort to unleash such a powerful blast also did a serious number on him. While Miles was able to save a powerful young hero and get her back into the fight, it might have also removed him from the battle in the process. It's the sort of sacrifice Miles would be willing to make under any circumstances for his friends, but it's still heartbreaking to see him actually have to go through with it. Ms. Marvel may also now be the only one who can keep Miles alive, with the fellow founding Champion promising to watch after him despite the chaos erupting around her.

Hopefully, Ms. Marvel will find a way to get Miles to safety before the continued chaos of King in Black overwhelms her again. Otherwise, Knull and his symbiotes might get another shot at corrupting Miles AND Kamala, which could be deadly given how the battle against Knull has been slowly turned against him by the other heroes who've been freed from Knull's influence.
