WARNING: The following contains spoilers for King In Black: Return of the Valkyries #2 by Jason Aaron, Torunn Grønbekk, Nina Vakueva, Tamra Bonvillain & VC's Joe Sabino

The chaos caused by King In Black has spread throughout the whole of Marvel's Earth, with the majority of demented symbiotes attacking from Knull's infection point of New York City. Many of the heroes who'd dedicated themselves to stopping Knull and saving the world have found themselves corrupted into Knull's twisted agents.

A handful of heroes remain in the city and uninfected, however -- including one notable former New Mutant. Dani Moonstar just reminded everyone how skilled she really is by holding her own against Knull in King in Black: Return of the Valkyries #2.

The coming of Knull has already taken down many of Earth's defenders -- with Cyclops, Storm, and Cable among the infected and corrupted. Xavier and Magneto have tried to prevent other mutants from making their way to New York, as a result, trying to keep the mutant population from being corrupted and bringing the symbiotes to Krakoa. But some have ignored these orders and thrown themselves into the conflict readily. This includes Dani Moonstar of the New Mutants. While other heroes in New York have turned their full focus to finding a way to beat back Knull, Dani is on the street-level of the city helping protect civilians and assist evacuations. Using her mutant abilities and her combat experience, Dani is able to hold the symbiotes at bay and even save a few lives.

Dani even ends up being so effective that Knull takes special time to confront her personally. Controlling one of his symbiote dragons and communicating through it, Knull tries to taunt the telepath as it attacks her. But Dani keeps it talking long enough for the civilians to escape further away, and even commands the rats in the sewers below to make enough noise to hinder Knull's senses. This gains Knull's full attention, with the dark god using the dragon to lash out at her. Dani throws everything she has at Knull, but the dragon form is able to brush off all the attacks. Despite this and her own increasing injuries, Dani remains defiant. She holds the line against Knull long enough for reinforcements to arrive -- in the form of Valkyrie and Hildegarde, both of whom throw themselves into battle against the dragon.

Rising back to her feet, Dani stands with the other two and prepares for a tough battle against an enraged Knull. Even if this is ultimately an inconsequential fight in the grand scheme of things, it's worth pointing out how long Dani lasts against Knull on her own. Even just as a stalling tactic, Dani's actions gave civilians the chance to survive the event -- and gives other heroes more time to further mobilize against Knull and find a way to overcome his corruption of the world.

If nothing else, Dani bought the world some time by catching the full attention of Knull and keeping it trained on just her. Now with a pair of fellow warriors by her side, Dani might be able to keep that distraction going -- potentially giving the other heroes the chance to figure out a way to save the rest of their allies and stop Knull once and for all. It's a minor moment in the event, but a powerful one when considering how a single New Mutant was able to effectively hold the line against a force that can stand against Thor in battle.
