Without proper protection and shelter, ice and snow can be a death sentence. Because of this, it makes sense to associate the command over ice, snow, and overall coldness with villainous, haughty characters.
But this isn't always the case. Quite a few friendly, kindhearted characters can have an icy touch in spite of their warm personalities and use their power for the greater good. Occasionally, their true nature might be hidden behind a cold shell, but they will still defrost over time and as they show their true colors. Even when characters act emotionless, they might still take the time to occasionally show they care.
10 Sailor Moon: Sailor Mercury Is The Sailor Scout Of Ice & Snow
Sweet, kindhearted Ami Mizuno transforms into Sailor Mercury. Technically speaking, Sailor Mercury is sometimes considered the Sailor Senshi of Water, but other times she is treated as being the Sailor Senshi of Ice, especially in contrast to the more ocean-themed Sailor Neptune. Her most famous ice attack is "Shine Snow Illusion." The live-action show expanded on this by giving her "Mercury Aqua Blizzard." The '90s anime also portrayed her "Shine Aqua Illusion" attack as ice-based, often trapping an enemy in a block of ice. Even her bubbles were shown to have a freezing effect.
9 Pretear: The White Pretear Heals The World With The Snow Of Miracles
Mannen is the Leafe Knight of Ice and he shares this power with Himeno when they fuse, but Himeno has a deeper connection to ice and snow than that.
Himeno is destined to become the White Pretear, who is fated to stop the Princess of Disaster with the Snow of Miracles. When she finally unlocks this form at the end of the story, she is not only able to save the day, but even heal those who lost their lives in the fight.
8 Pretty Cure: Cure Beauty Uses Ice Based Attacks
Cure Beauty is an ice-based Cure that appears in Smile Pretty Cure! Aoki Reika is elegant but modest and empathetic. She has also shown herself to be responsible, polite, and hardworking. Having power over ice, she can use it in different ways, from freezing the wind to fashioning swords out of ice. Her most basic attack is "Beauty Blizzard," which she can upgrade to "Beauty Blizzard Arrow" and, with Cure Peace, "Thunder Blizzard."
7 Urusei Yatsura: Oyuki Is The Icy Queen Of Neptune
Oyuki is the Queen of Neptune and comes from a race of aliens whose women seemed to have inspired the Japanese myth of the yuki-onna, or snow spirits. While she rarely shows her emotions, she's a fairly friendly person and a childhood friend of Lum. That said, she does have her vices. She's a bit of a miser and characters have learned that they shouldn't get her angry, otherwise they'd be subject to a powerful storm of ice, wind, and snow.
6 A Little Snow Fairy Sugar: Sugar Is A Snow Fairy In The Making
Sugar is a snow fairy apprentice learning to earn her wings. As part of her training, she goes to the human world, where she befriends a human girl named Saga in a fictionalized German town. In this story's universe, seasonal fairies are the forces behind the weather. Sugar's two friends are a pair of fairies named Salt and Pepper, who are apprentice sun and wind fairies respectively.
5 Soul Eater: Free Is An Immortal Werewolf With Ice Powers
Free is an immortal werewolf who uses ice magic. Having been imprisoned by witches for centuries, he hasn't used this power in years and is somewhat rusty at it, often imprisoning himself in blocks of ice. Fortunately, he's immortal, so he can't do too much damage to himself.
While dangerous, powerful, and having a backstory of being a prisoner, Free is nice, grateful to those who helped him, and generally quite silly. It helps that, being immortal, he doesn't really have to take anything seriously since nothing is a life or death situation for him.
4 My Hero Academia: Shoto Todoroki Has Fire & Ice In His Corner
Shoto originally seemed cold and aloof, but eventually proved to be kind underneath it all. He even has a sense of humor. That said, he's still somewhat socially awkward, somewhat arrogant, and can be quite brutal on the battlefield. Shoto has the Quirk of Half-Cold Half-Hot, which gives him twice the elemental power. He can generate ice, as well as scorching fires. Using both, he can create barriers, waves, and even skate on his element.
3 Yu Yu Hakusho: Yukina Is The Kindest Of The Ice Maidens
In this anime series, the ice maidens can be cold and cruel, as best shown when they kill their male children. Despite this, Yukina is so kindhearted and innocent that even animals love her. She also has healing powers she's more than willing to share with her friends. In fact, she left her people out of disgust over how heartless they have become.
Despite this, Yukina isn't so forgiving. She hopes to find her long-lost brother, who is none other than Hiei, to destroy the ice maidens out of revenge for what they did to her family. Hiei himself thinks they are already lifeless.
2 Magic Knight Rayearth: Umi Shows Her Warm Heart & Ice Powers As The Story Goes On
Admittedly, Umi starts out the series as something of a spoiled brat, she soon reveals herself to be a sensitive and caring person. She is also extremely protective of her new friends, Hikaru and Fuu, and acts as the de-facto big sister of the group. For the most part, most of Umi's spells revolve around using liquid water, but her most powerful is "Icicle Blades," an ice-themed attack.
1 One Piece: Brook Can Summon The Coldness Of Death Itself
Brook was a pirate who died but, thanks to the power of a Devil Fruit, was able to return to his body. The catch was that everything but his hair had rotted away, leaving him an animated skeleton. Eccentric, but compassionate, he is now the musician of the Straw Hat Pirates. Being dead has some advantages, as his spiritual energy allows him to tap into the coldness of the Underworld. He can share this frozen aura with his sword and even freeze his surroundings.
