Kiefer Sutherland, who starred in 1990 sci-fi thriller "Flatliners," is nearing a deal to board the Sony Pictures remake.

Directed by Joel Schumacher, the original starred Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt as medical students who conduct experiments on each other to produce near-death experiences in order to learn about the afterlife. Naturally, those experiments go horribly awry.

Deadline reports Sutherland will play a seasoned doctor, joining Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemens in the new film.

According to the website, schedules were worked out that will allow the "24" veteran to film both "Flatliners" and his new ABC drama "Designated Survivor." No deal is in place, but Sutherland has committed to the remake.

Directed by Niels Arden Oplev (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") from a script by Ben Ripley (“Source Code”), "Flatliners" is set to begin filming any day now in Toronto.
