Entergalactic, the upcoming animated special from two-time Grammy-winning rapper Kid Cudi, has released more gorgeously intriguing footage as part of Netflix's TUDUM global event.

The new clip provides an explanatory preamble showing Cudi (a.k.a. Scott Mescudi) alongside executive producer Kenya Barris, who brings comedic sensibilities as the creator of the Black-ish television franchise and writer of features such as last year's long-awaited sequel, Coming 2 America. Here, the creative duo described the genesis of the Netflix project, which goes all the way back to a key song on Cudi's 2009 debut album, "Man on the Moon: The End of Day," titled "Enter Galactic (Love Connection Part I)." The rapper explained how the song was the perfect inspiration for his animated (psilocybin-influenced) statement on love, despite it being one of his oldest. "I want a song that truly embodies the tone," Cudi said. "And, like, "Entergalactic," from "Man on the Moon", is a love song. It’s about me meeting this girl that I like, and we were doing shrooms for the first time." Indeed, the footage shows an urban romance taking a beautifully surreal cosmic bicycle trip.

A New, Psychedelic Approach to Black Love Stories

Barris also explains how Cudi's 2009 song inspired a "visceral," angelic vision of the girl whom Cudi courts in the song, evoking a dreamy aesthetic. Thus, Entergalactic is designed to fill a vacancy in the arena of romance stories -- specifically black romance stories. "This is a black love story," Barris said. "We haven’t seen black people drawn like this. We haven’t seen New York drawn like this." Cudi added to this thought, explaining its approach to romance, "I just felt like there’s a void when it comes to love stories and black love stories in the industry. And we don’t see it a lot. Young modern dating that, in the world today, what it’s like. This is 2022, this is how people date."

The new clip complements what was revealed of Entergalactic in a teaser trailer from this past June released during Netflix's Geeked Week 2022. There, Netflix first previewed the special's story, which centers on a New York City-based artist named Jabari (Cudi), who is attempting to navigate a career while moving into the apartment of his dreams only to find himself love-struck by his new neighbor, a photographer named Meadow (Jessica Williams). Thus, a whirlwind romance ensues, showcasing a surreal mix of art, music and fashion, manifesting the kind of magic mushroom splendor that Cudi's classic song originally expressed.

The special's previous early promotional material also arrived with the reveal of its impressive voice cast. Besides the starring duo of Cudi and Williams, Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet fields the role of Jabari's best friend, Jimmy, a conspiracy-minded, cryptocurrency-touting drug dealer. They are joined by names such as Vanessa Hudgens, Tyrone "Ty Dolla $ign" Griffin, Laura Harrier, Keith David, Teyana Taylor, Christopher Abbott, Danielle "070 Shake" Balbuena, Jaden Smith, Arturo Castro and -- in a wonderful but of randomness -- Macaulay Culkin.

A production of DNEG animation studio, Entergalactic was written by the duo of Ian Edelman and Maurice Williams, with an up-and-coming helmer in Fletcher Moules (Clash of Clans: Revenge) serving as director. Star Cudi serves as executive producer alongside Barris, joined in that capacity by Karina Manashil, Dennis Cummings and director Williams.

Entergalactic does not have a Netflix release date just yet.
