Kick-Ass co-creator Mark Millar won't rule out the possibility of Kick-Ass 3 happening one day but would strongly advise against holding your breath.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Millar insisted he's "literally never had a conversation" about a third Kick-Ass movie with the franchise's other creatives, including Kick-Ass (2010) director and Kick-Ass 2 (2013) producer Matthew Vaughn. Combined with Universal owning the Kick-Ass film rights, Millar working on various Millarworld projects for Netflix, and Vaughn developing the spy movie Argylle as the potential start of a trilogy for Apple TV+, Millar said there's "definitely no plans" to make Kick-Ass 3 anytime soon.

That said, Millar admitted, "We do have one last [Kick-Ass] story to tell, which is the big finale storyline. I kind of like the idea of that as well, because practically we can come back a little later to all the characters in different places, so there's a potential story there at some point." However, he once again emphasized that this doesn't mean Kick-Ass 3 is in any kind of active development, "because there's 100 percent no plans to do it at the moment."

The Kick-Ass movie franchise itself has laid dormant since Kick-Ass 2 bowed to lower box office returns and weaker reviews than its predecessor did three years earlier. Chloë Grace Moretz, who played Mindy Macready aka Hit-Girl in the first two installments, expressed her disappointment with how the Kick-Ass sequel turned out in June 2018, stating she “wished [Kick-Ass 2] had been handled in a little bit of a different way.” All the same, Moretz noted she still thinks the original Kick-Ass movie "was really, really special."

Around the time Moretz made her comments, Vaughn announced that he and Millar intended to reboot the Kick-Ass movies, telling fans, "Look what Mark Millar is doing with the comic for clues.” Of course, as Millar indirectly pointed out in his interview with Screen Rant, a lot has changed in the years between then and now, and it seems whatever Kick-Ass-related plans he and Vaughn had in mind have since been moved to the back-burner.

In the meantime, Vaughn will release The King's Man, a prequel to his first two Kingsman movies (themselves based on the comic book Millar co-created with Dave Gibbons). After being delayed multiple times by COVID-19, The King's Man will finally open in theaters on Dec. 22.
