Jim Carrey is being wooed for a key role in Kick-Ass 2, the Jeff Wadlow-directed sequel to the 2010 superhero action comedy, Deadline reports.

Based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s miniseries and the Hit-Girl spinoff, the film picks up months after the original, as Kick-Ass forms alliances with other local heroes and joins a team called Justice Forever, which discovers the Red Mist -- rechristened "Motherfucker" -- is gathering his own group of villains.

Although a deal is characterized as "far from a sure thing," Carrey would play Colonel Stars, an ex-Mafia member turned vigilante who, with his brother Lieutenant Stripes, forms Justice Forever. The actor, who last starred in Mr. Popper's Penguins, is said to be a fan of Matthew Vaughn and the original film, and even wore a Kick-Ass costume in 2010 when he sang a duet with Conan O'Brien during the talk-show host's "The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On Television Tour."

Kick-Ass 2, which opens June 28, 2013, stars returning cast members Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Yancy Butler, along with new additions John Leguizamo, Donald Faison, Morris Chestnut and Robert Emms.
