MGM is reportedly nearing a deal to bring Kevin Smith's television adaptation of “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension” to Amazon.

According to Deadline, the new take on the cult-favorite 1984 sci-fi adventure comedy could appear on the steaming service within the next year.

Smith announced plans for the project in May, describing the first season as an adaptation of the original film, and the second season as the long-awaited sequel "Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League."

Written and directed by W.D. Richter ("Invasion of the Body Snatchers," "Big Trouble in Little China), "Buckaroo Banzai starred Peter Weller in the title role as a physicist/neurosurgeon/test pilot/rock star who tries to save the world by defeating a band of inter-dimensional aliens. The cast also included John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin and Christopher Lloyd.

Smith will host his traditional Comic-Con International panel in Hall H on Saturday, so perhaps we'll learn more details then.
