Beloved writer and director Kevin Smith offers his prediction on which world-ending terror could be coming to threaten the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking to Forbes, Smith shared who thinks could pose an even greater threat than Thanos. "Well, there's a part of me that feels Galactus because they want to bring Fantastic Four in a big, bad way. But I don't know, man," Smith said. "They got enough characters now that maybe— I'm not alone in this. It's not like a hot take, but feels like Secret Wars is coming." The event mentioned by the Clerks director is an iconic piece of Marvel comics history that featured a multiversal incident that saw Earth-616 collide with Earth-1610, with certain pieces of both realities being "saved," resulting in a new universe known as Battleworld.

Smith went on to explain that he originally believed Captain America: Civil War would be the closest comic book fans would get to a big-screen adaptation of a major crossover event but given the MCU's recent focus on the alternate realities, he's no longer sure. "In a world where they're doing the multiverse, how far away is somebody like Beyonder?" Smith queried.

Kevin Smith's Hopes and Dreams

Despite his anticipation for a potential Secret Wars adaptation, Smith concluded by noting that he wasn't discounting the arrival of Galactus just yet. "Maybe Galactus is on the way to [Secret Wars], or maybe one is on the way to Galactus because Galactus, in terms of a world-ending threat like Thanos, is about as big as that gets in Marvel," Smith said. "This is a character that eats whole planets, a world-ender of sorts."

While various filmmakers have voiced their chagrin for Marvel Studios' ever-growing pantheon of characters, Smith has openly praised the franchise. "I think they're brilliant. I think they're fantastic," Smith said. "They're my favorite form of entertainment, and [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige is my favorite living American filmmaker right now."

Despite his enthusiasm for the MCU, Smith has also noted that he has no desire to contribute to the expansive roster of films and series, stating that he lacks the skill to effectively helm a massive superhero blockbuster. "I've been talking about this shit since the '90s, so I should be out there doing it, but number one, I'm not that talented," Smith explained. "Not talented enough to pull off comic book movies. You need visual style to do that sort of thing. I don't think visually. I think in words."

Smith's latest feature film Clerks III hits theaters for an extremely limited release on Sept. 13 and Sept. 15.
