In Heavy Metal #306, filmmaker Kevin Smith explains to Joshua Sky how non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are more than just a fad, and CBR can exclusively reveal several excerpts and images from the new issue.

"In Clerks 3, there’s a joke where Randal refers to NFTs as modern-day Beanie Babies," Smith said. "And a lot of people out there do see them that way. But I believe it’s more like Bitcoin, the technology is very real, as importantly the desire is sincere. It’s as real as any art, or currency. It’s both. Digital art is evolving. You can put it on your flat screen T.V. and it looks like a real painting. You can take something on your computer and 3D print it. You can connect the digital to the physical world. And we’re doing that, dropping NFTs, in league with exclusive physical merchandise and comics."

In April, it was announced that Smith was selling his upcoming horror film Killroy Was Here as an NFT. In discussing this with Sky, Smith said, "Selling films as NFTs has the potential to be incredibly empowering...Now we’re in a space that is very untraditional in that way. It’s exciting for me as a filmmaker because I can make a movie for one hundred people and not think about catching everyone. That gives an artist freedom to not have to make something mainstream, but to make something incredibly personal. Who buys art? The people who react to it and have a personal connection. Same thing with any film."

Heavy Metal #306 is now on sale.
