Kevin Smith Gives His Take on the Big "Captain America" Twist

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz's "Captain America: Steve Rogers" #1.

Fans and creators alike are sounding off on last week's major "Captain America" twist -- that Steve Rogers has been a HYDRA agent this entire time -- and the latest to give their take is revered director and occasional comics scribe Kevin Smith, who isn't quite sure the change will become Cap "canon."

In a recent post on Twitter, Smith showed interest in the storyline, but expressed doubt that the HYDRA retcon would stick -- pointing to a memorable scene from 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger" as his evidence:

Current #CaptainAmerica story could be fun but won't be canon change, because THIS guy could never be a Hydra agent: https://t.co/jGov7JQmZZ

Smith does have a point -- Rogers' consistent bravery and selflessness (and ability to nudge Mjolnir) in the films certainly don't point to Evans' Rogers being a HYDRA agent. Plus, Evans recently expressed his own bafflement at the new direction. But isn't that the exact kind of trickery we can expect from a HYDRA agent...?
