Kevin Smith's Strange Adventures HBO Max series is no more.

Speaking on the Hollywood Babble-On podcast, the acclaimed writer/director confirmed that his upcoming project is the latest production to be axed following Warner Bros.' merger with Discovery. "It feels like what was once, to me, a promising future of we are going to see a bunch of DC stuff on HBO Max. More DC stuff than we would see theatrically, including shit like Strange Adventures…gone!" Smith said.

Smith went on to recount how he learned that Strange Adventures was terminated, noting that he was told by Supergirl writer Eric Carrasco before Warner Bros. publically announced its latest slate of cancellations. "I got a call the other day from Eric before all of this story broke and he was just like 'Strange Adventures is officially dead,' and I was like 'What the f–k, are you serious?!'" The director further noted that while the news was unfortunate, he ultimately understood the decision, stating that it fitted into the new plan of Warner Bros. Discovery President and CEO David Zaslav.

"I know we haven’t heard from them for a while, but I guess this goes in parts with the new moves with David Zaslav," Smith continued. "But good lord, I thought Strange Adventures being a causality kind of made sense to me. Nobody necessarily knows these characters; it sounded like an expensive show." Smith also clarified that the episode he was writing, and was aiming to direct, was going to focus on Perry White and Jimmy Olsen after Bizarro kidnaps the pair and takes them to Bizarro World.

Little is known about the Strange Adventures series but the original announcement in October 2019 noted that the series was intended as an anthology series. The show would comprise one-hour-long episodes that highlighted stories of superheroes and superpowers often causing more harm than good, acting as "cautionary tales" similar to Black Mirror.

Beyond sharing his disappointment over Strange Adventures' cancellation, Smith also spoke about Warner Bros. decision to abruptly cancel the live-action Batgirl film despite it having largely finished production. "It's an incredibly bad look to cancel the Latina Batgirl movie, you know what I'm saying?" Smith said. "[Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah] did a couple episodes of Ms. Marvel and it was a wonderful fucking show. Great looking, and they had more money to do Batgirl than they had to do an episode of Ms. Marvel."
