Writer/director Kevin Smith revealed he's finished the first draft for Clerks III.

"I started writing CLERKS III on December 28th and just finished the 101 page first draft last night!" Smith declared on Facebook. "But the writing doesn’t begin when you start tapping the keys: I’ve been stirring this stew in my brain pan for awhile now. So when I sat down to put years of daydreaming into actual words, the typing part of the writing process was pretty brisk." Smith also revealed that he'd shown the script to a few people in order to receive feedback.

Smith would go on to mention that he'd written a version of Clerks III several years ago that never went into production. "This is a much more personal story than the previous incarnation, drawing directly on the heart attack that nearly killed me (3 years ago next month)," he wrote. "It was oddly triggering writing those scenes, as it was the first time in a while I contemplated how close I came to shuffling lose this mortal coil."

Additionally, Smith named some of the characters from 2006's Clerks II that would be appearing in Clerks III, including Dante Hicks, Randal Graves, Elias Grover, Becky Scott and Jay and Silent Bob.

Smith's View Askewniverse kicked off in 1994 with the release of his first film, Clerks, which was filmed in the convenience store where he was working at the time. The movie was shot in black-and-white and would eventually be picked up by Miramax Films. Clerks was well received by critics and audiences alike and was followed in 2006 by Clerks II, which featured Dante and Randal now working at the fast-food restaurant Mooby's

The most recent View Askewniverse was Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which had its theatrical release in late 2019. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot would feature a multitude of actors from previous View Askewniverse films, including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jason Lee, Justin Long, Shannon Elizabeth and many more.

Smith previously revealed that he was working on the script for Clerks III around the time that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic started. "And now that everything has been canceled for a month or two, I will have time to finish the Twilight of the Mallrats and Clerks 3 scripts," he explained.

Written and directed by Kevin Smith, Clerks III has yet to receive a release date.
