Kevin Sanders: volunteer firefighter, hero and Superman fan

If you’ve watched any of the footage from the memorial service for those who died last week in the fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, you might have noticed a familiar shade of blue amid the sea of people in attendance — Superman blue. Many of the mourners wore Superman shirts to honor volunteer firefighter and Superman fan Kevin William Sanders, one of the first responders on the scene.

According to The Associated Press, many of Sanders’ former and current students — he taught veterinary technician training at McLennan Community College in Waco — wore the shirts, which appeared on camera a few times during his eulogy. Sanders’ brother said Sanders was a fan of Star Trek, Bo and Luke Duke — “but not Coy and Vance” — and the Man of Steel. He said he inherited his brother’s car when he turned 16, a 1989 Chevy Celebrity that Sanders had “painted blue with latex house paint and an old paint roller. “Emblazoned on the hood was a four-foot wide Superman logo.” Sanders also named his three-month-old son Reeve after Superman actor Christopher Reeve.

You can watch footage from the memorial, showing attendees in Superman T-shirts, on the Dallas-Fort Worth CBS affiliate’s website. His eulogy begins just after the hour mark.
