You just can’t keep a good wizard down. Even though Avengers: Infinity War ended with Doctor Strange crumbling to ash after Thanos’ fateful finger snap, like Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the good doctor will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more adventures.
During an interview with CinemaBlend, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed in passing that Doctor Strange 2 was all but a certainty. Speaking of the long periods of time separating individual releases, Feige casually mentioned that Doctor Strange will get his own sequel. “Sometimes it’s where do those characters pop up?” Feige said. “[Doctor] Strange, you know, whenever we do another Strange one, which we will do, it will be a number of years from the first Strange, and yet he’s a very big part of Infinity War.”
Doctor Strange was released in 2016, and the character later had a brief role in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. The Sorcerer Supreme then returned in full force in Infinity War, where he played a big role in the fight against Thanos, and in (possibly) setting up the events of Avengers 4. It’s already been two years since his solo movie was released, and yet the character appeared in three separate films.
Feige says that Doctor Strange 2 is a film “which we will do” — it just could be a few years away still. It’s certainly exciting to finally have a confirmation, but we probably won’t find out when the movie will come until Avengers 4 is finally upon us.
Avengers: Infinity War is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin.
