Kevin Conroy knows a thing or two about how Batman should sound, having played the Caped Crusader in numerous animated incarnations for nearly twenty years. He also knows how Batman shouldn't sound — something that Christian Bale apparently doesn't know, according to the voice actor.

At this weekend's C2E2 convention in Chicago, I reported on The Kevin Conroy Spotlight panel for Comic Book Resources. Conroy was asked if he was ever approached to redub Christian Bale's Batman voice in The Dark Knight, prompting a surprisingly honest appraisal of the live action Bruce Wayne.

"Christian Bale is a damn good actor — he's an excellent actor," said Conroy. "He just got steered wrong. Obviously someone should have stopped him and said, 'You sound ridiculous!' But no one did, so what are you going to do?"

Conroy was quick to put the blame on a lack of oversight for Bale's performance, stating that it's the actor's role to invest himself as deeply into a character as possible — a producer or some other "third eye" should have reeled him in a bit.
