Although critics praised Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, fan reaction was much more divisive and, at times, vitriolic. Some took aim at Kelly Marie Tran's Rose Tico, subjecting the character's 'Wookieepedia' page to racist and offensive edits. Tran's Instagram now shows no visible posts, which is reportedly the result of harassment.
The Star Wars Facts Twitter account offered clarification about the disappearance of Tran's posts, tweeting, "Kelly Marie Tran has deleted all the posts off her Instagram due to months of harassment she has received for her character Rose in #TheLastJedi."
Rose was introduced in The Last Jedi as a mechanic who joins Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) to disable the First Order’s ability to track the Resistance through hyperspace. Backlash against the character started prior to the film's release. The Star Wars Facebook page stepped in to defend the heroine following the release of the film.
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi is available now on streaming platforms, Blu-ray and 4k HD. The film stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo and the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa.
