While Keanu Reeves has publicly expressed his desire to return for a belated Constantine sequel, the star now admits that he's unsure of such a possibility.

The actor was quizzed by ComicBook.com about the chances for a follow-up film, offering an update that is much less optimistic than his recent statements. Indeed, despite his efforts to make Constantine 2 a reality, he admits that the DC Comics-adapting sequel project is still very much up in the air. "I was hoping it would, but we don't know," Reeves stated. "Yeah, we're trying."

Keanu Reeves Met with James Gunn About Constantine 2

Reeves, who starred as the eponymous John Constantine in the 2005 film Constantine, recently revealed that he spoke with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn about Constantine 2's prospective place in the DC Universe. Yet, he remained coy about the conversation, only giving the brief answer of "Yes, me too" when asked by a fan if he had spoken to Gunn and whether he wanted to see it happen. Reeves himself though has been a vocal advocate for creating another film, admitting that he "loved the role" and "loved the character." This ultimately led to the movie being given the go-ahead, reuniting the original film's creative team of director Francis Lawrence and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman.

However, while Constantine 2 was confirmed, it wasn't given a release date or release window. Moreover, it was noticeably absent from DC Studios' recent presentation for its upcoming DC Universe films and shows. Screenwriter Goldsman recently stated he is still writing the script, so it remains in its early stages. However, he added that he is already working on returning to key themes that were a part of the first Constantine movie. "The character is very much Keanu [Reeves] and the way he and Francis [Lawrence] saw the world of good and evil, and the wonderful and authentic noir where there is a world behind the world of good and evil coexist with our world right up close," the writer said.

The first Constantine film was released on Feb. 18, 2005, and starred Reeves as John Constantine, a man with the ability to view half-angels and half-demons on Earth. He was joined by Rachel Weisz as detective Angela Dodson and Shia LaBeouf as Chas Kramer his driver and apprentice. While the film has developed a cult following, it was initially criticized upon release, with Rotten Tomatoes awarding it just 46% on its Tomatometer.

Keanu Reeves Begged to Make Constantine 2

Reeves openly expressed the extent of his enthusiasm for a Constantine return, most notably revealing that he went so far as to beg Warner Bros. to make it happen. "I was like, [adopts Oliver Twist voice] 'Can I please have some more? ... I kept asking almost every year. I'd be like, 'Can I please?' [and] they'd be like, 'No, no!'" Thus, the more muted, past-tense-driven nature of his most recent comment seems to deflate the sequel's prospects -- at least for now.

A release date for Constantine 2 has not been confirmed yet, but Keanu Reeves is set to star in the upcoming film John Wick: Chapter 4. It will hit theaters on May 27, 2022.
