Keanu Reeves has provided an update on the live-action BRZRKR comic book movie adaptation and anime spinoff series, both of which he's starring in and producing for Netflix.

"We’re working with Netflix, who have been very cool. They’re going to let us do an R-rated story which is cool," Reeves told Collider. "My ambition or hope is not to do a filmed version of the comic book so that they’ll have things in common, definitely the main character and his kind of rule set, but that we can take it to other places as well... We’re working on trying to set up a company with the animation, and we’ve hired a writer for the film, Mattson Tomlin. He’s been cool and just starting to put things together. That’s where we’re at."

An up and comer, Tomlin wrote Netflix's popular comic book-esque action/thriller Project Power and co-wrote the upcoming The Batman with director Matt Reeves. He's also serving as showrunner on Netflix's developing Terminator anime series and is writing a live-action Mega Man film that may yet find its way to Netflix thanks to producer Peter Cherin and his Chernin Entertainment banner's first-look deal with the streaming service.

Reeves created the concept for Boom! Studios' BRZRKR comic book series, which is written by Matt Kindt and illustrated by Ron Garney. Netflix and Boom! describe the property as a “brutally epic saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000-year fight through the ages. The man known only as B is half-mortal and half-god, cursed and compelled to violence… even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the earth for centuries, B may have finally found a refuge -- working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B will be granted the one thing he desires -- the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence… and how to end it."

The BRZRKR comic is a massive success for Boom!, with its first issue becoming the biggest-selling single issue since Jason Aaron and John Cassaday's Star Wars #1 for Marvel Comics in 2015. CBR's Sam Stone praised the first issue in his review, describing it as "an action vehicle that feels more viscerally graphic than anything Reeves has done on the big screen to date -- and that's saying something."

Netflix's BRZRKR film and anime series have yet to receive release dates. As for Reeves, he will return to the screen when The Matrix Resurrections premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on Dec. 22.
