Kat Dennings' character Dr. Darcy Lewis was a surprise addition to the cast of WandaVision, but it might have been Dennings herself who was the most surprised of all when her character was added to the series.

Dennings explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Friday how she wasn't expecting a call from Marvel Studios, nor that the studio was looking to use her character in the show. "Totally surprised," Dennings said. "I got cold called by Marvel, and I was just like, 'Yeah, of course, whatever you want, I'll do it.'"

"I didn't know what it was,” Dennings said. “I knew these Disney+ shows were kind of coming out. I didn't know which one this could be, so I was a little bit surprised because my character had no contact with anyone in the WandaVision world."

Dennings denied knowing what the show has in store for her character. "I only know what I shot," Dennings responded when asked by Kimmel.

After years of being absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dr. Lewis turned up unexpectedly in WandaVision's fourth episode, "We Interrupt This Program." Dr. Lewis, now possessing a PhD in Astrophysics, was called in by the extraterrestrial intelligence agency S.W.O.R.D. to help investigate the anomaly surrounding the town of Westview.

That anomaly, of course, is the self-generated "Hex" shield Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, has placed around Westview, transforming the town into her own private paradise -- one that's beginning to show signs of fracturing. "We Interrupt This Program" was the first episode largely told from a point of view other than Wanda's, and explained how she had created a reality that was patterning itself after several American TV sitcoms through the decades.

Darcy Lewis first appeared in the MCU in 2011's Thor, as a then-college student assisting astrophysicists Dr. Jane Foster and Dr. Erik Selvig. She returned in the 2013 sequel Thor: The Dark World, but wasn't seen again until her reintroduction in WandaVision -- with her own astrophysics degree.

Dennings' character had largely been working behind the scenes with S.W.O.R.D. in the series. In the most recent episode "All-New Halloween Spooktacular!," however, Wanda expands the Hex's boundaries when Vision attempts to break free and warn the outside of what's happening in Westview. Dr. Lewis is swallowed up by the Hex when it expands at the episode's conclusion, but its effect on her isn't yet known.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
