In one tense scene from this summer's Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos tortures his "daughter" Nebula, played by Karen Gillan, with the intent to manipulate her sister Gamora into revealing the location of the Soul Stone. Nebula, who was turned into a cyborg at Thanos's hands, is shown suspended helplessly in midair, with her cybernetic body parts separated and strung out around her.

Shedding some light on how this scene came to life, Gillan has posted a very blue picture of herself with the Russo Brothers, directors of Infinity War, which was taken during production.

The sturdy support that's holding Gillan up in the photo was removed entirely from the shot, and one of her hands appears to be out of costume. Her face, however, is fully recognizable as her character, showing that she's already undergone the hours of makeup that it takes to transform her into the blue-skinned, hairless, partially machine alien Nebula. It seems that this role presented more than one kind of ordeal for Gillan.

Thanks to Gamora's intervention, Nebula survived her own ordeal and even went on to survive the notoriously lethal end of the film. She will next be seen in Avengers 4, the as-yet-untitled sequel coming to theaters in April 2019.
