The actress was speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic Los Angeles when Scorsese's comments were brought up. "I would absolutely say that Marvel movies are cinema. Cinema is story-telling with visuals," Gillan said.
She specifically pointed to James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy films, saying his soul was in them. "He injects so much of his own personality, his sense of humor ... that's a very big representation of who he is as a person and therefore it's very cinematic. He's an artist."
In addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Gillan also portrayed Nebula in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. She is will be reprising her role as Ruby Roundhouse in Jumanji: The Next Level, the sequel to 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Gillan will reportedly have a small guest voice role in Marvel's upcoming What If...? television series.
