The next installment in The Karate Kid film franchise is crane-kicking its way into theaters.

Per Variety, the Karate Kid universe is expanding beyond its popular sequel series Cobra Kai. The news comes days after Season 5 of the Netflix series premiered on Sept. 9. The upcoming Karate Kid project will be the franchise's first film entry since the 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. The film, which releases in 2024, currently does not have a synopsis or casting information, and it's unclear whether it will tie in with Cobra Kai's established storylines.

The original 1984 Karate Kid film starring Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso quickly became a cultural phenomenon in the United States and beyond. The movie produced two sequels with Daniel at the forefront. Its fourth installment, the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid, focused on Julie Pierce (Hilary Swank) instead of Daniel. Despite the protagonist change, Pat Morita still reprised his role as beloved sensei Mr. Miyagi.

Cobra Kai's recent season fared well with critics and fans alike, receiving a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series, which originally premiered on YouTube Red in 2018, features several characters from the original Karate Kid films, with Daniel and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) at center stage. The Netflix series also brought back Chozen Toguchi from The Karate Kid Part II and Mike Barnes from The Karate Kid Part III in Season 5. While those characters are no longer villains, Terry Silver and John Kreese are still causing a ruckus with their violent Cobra Kai karate methods.
