Kakashi Hatake, also known as the Copy Ninja, is a Naruto fan-favorite character. He is known for his aloof demeanor, his cool character design, and his incredible power level. Many characters, from his students to the Anbu Black Ops, respect and revere him.

However, Kakashi did not always live up to his hype. There were many times he did things that many would consider jerk moves and that did not reflect his status as a teacher and mentor.

10 He Always Brushed Off Might Guy, Despite Guy's Great Friendship

Might Guy was a fierce defender and loyal friend to Kakashi Hatake, but Kakashi brushed him off on more than one occasion. In the early moments of the series, Kakashi was always ignoring Might Guy's playful challenges and ignored any of his claims of rivalry.

While it is understandable why Kakashi might hesitate to get close to others or call them a true friend—seeing as his two best friends from when he was a kid met terrible ends—Might Guy was strong enough to bear the load. Things do change by Boruto, and these two seem to be a lot closer.

9 He Did Not tell Mirai Why They Were Going On The Hot Springs Trip

Speaking of Kakashi getting along with Might Guy better by Boruto, in an arc featuring Mirai, Kakashi and Might Guy are escorted to a hot spring. They take Mirai along with them under the guise of being their bodyguard so they can enjoy a vacation (Might Guy was permanently injured during the war and Kakashi lost his Sharingan). Little did she know, there was much more to it.

It turns out, the Jashin cult was active in the area, and the primary point of the trip was to root them out. Of course, they did not let Mirai in on it, understanding her family history with the cult. However, Mirai ended up going in alone. While she was fine, it seems a bit of a jerk move.

8 He Concealed His Face & Pretended To Be Someone Else

Kakashi without his mask

There was an entire episode that centered around figuring out what was under Kakashi's mask, and Kakashi dedicated so much time and energy to hide his face and keep his mask on. He would not even eat while others were watching for fear of them seeing his face.

However, Kakashi did reveal his face on multiple occasions, both in Naruto and Boruto. Unfortunately, he was so unrecognizable in his disguise that no one knew it was him. The jerk move here was showing his face but keeping it a secret.

7 He Stole Everyone's Jutsu

While Kakashi's ability to steal others' jutsu is what made him such a famous and formidable shinobi, and that is part of the reason why fans love him, his signature power was a total jerk move to other shinobi.

Imagine how angry a shinobi would be when, after generations of hiding a hidden jutsu that their family took years to perfect, Kakashi swoops in to copy their jutsu and potentially teach it to the entirety of the Hidden Leaf Village. It is a great potentiality for Konoha, but for those other shinobi, it would be a serious bummer, which is why characters like Zabuza were so angry when it was first revealed that Kakashi had this ability.

6 He Uses One Thousand Years Of Death

The use of the One Thousand Years of Death move is a jerk move in and of itself, and the reasons why this move is so underhanded speaks for itself. Fans are first introduced to this move during the Bell Test when Kakashi first tested Team 7's teamwork potential. Naruto was the unlucky recipient of this punishment.

It turns out that this move had been passed on along with the Bell Test, which establishes a lineage of jerk moves that goes back possibly for generations.

5 He Left Naruto To Work With Ebisu

Ebisu the jonin ninja from Naruto

Ebisu was characterized as kind of a letdown as a shinobi. He was Konohamaru's teacher, and he was not shown doing much beyond following the mischievous child around. He was also known for being a bit lecherous. So, it seemed a pretty big jerk move when Kakashi left Naruto in Ebisu's hands while he focused on Sasuke.

Fans hoped Ebisu would work out and somehow show Naruto a jutsu that proved Ebisu's mentor status and helped Naruto in the Exams. Unfortunately, Ebisu did little to nothing, and Naruto eventually ran into Jiraiya, who would be his real mentor.

4 He Was Mean To Obito

Kakashi, Rin, and Obito as kids

As a child, Kakashi had it rough, but when he was placed on a team with Rin and Obito, things started to turn around. He had friends. However, he did not have a clue about how to treat friends, and much like Naruto and Sasuke's bitter rivalry, he was constantly at odds with Obito Uchiha and was very rude to him.

Kakashi would soon realize just how much Rin and Obito meant to him, but they would eventually perish (or seem to perish) and leave Kakashi without his friends.

3 He Left Sakura To Figure Out Her Mentor On Her Own

If fans did not like Kakashi leaving Naruto in Ebisu's hands, they should also be suspicious of Kakashi's complete negligence of Sakura Haruno throughout the vast majority of the series. Not only did he focus only on Naruto and Sasuke when they were on missions, but he also set up mentorships for Sasuke (himself) and Naruto (Ebisu and later Jiraiya) but not her.

She was left to find her mentor on her own. Luckily, she was able to sway Tsunade into teaching her how to become one of the world's best medical ninja.

2 He Taught Sasuke A Move That Uses A Lot Of Chakra Right After Telling Him Not To Overexert Himself

It was pretty negligent for Kakashi to see that Sasuke had a curse mark, know that it would act up if he exerted too much energy, and then subsequently teach Sasuke the Chidori knowing Sasuke would do anything to beat his enemies (in this case, Gaara). It was a recipe for disaster.

Sasuke's reliance on the curse mark would later lead him into the hands of Orochimaru and thus cause a lot of grief throughout the series. If Kakashi had intervened properly and helped Sasuke out of the exams, perhaps there would have been time to get rid of the curse mark and keep him from joining Orochimaru.

1 He Underestimated His Students & Read His Book

Kakashi reads Make Out Tactics

Kakashi loving the Make Out Tactics books was not the root of the problem. Rather, it can probably be traced more toward hubris and the tendency to underestimate both Sakura and Naruto.

Kakashi could often be found hiding and reading his book while waiting for his students to get it together, as in the Bell Test. However, his love for the book proved folly during his second Bell Test with Sakura and Naruto. The jerk move of reading the book when he should have been taking his students more seriously ended up biting him in the end.
