With the release of the first official photo of the new "Star Trek" film -- a close-up of a Starfleet uniform patch -- director Justin Lin has confirmed its title: "Star Trek Beyond." Simon Pegg, the movie's co-star and co-writer, first revealed the title in May.

Production is under way in Vancouver on the third installment of Paramount Pictures' rebooted franchise, which Pegg told SPINOFF is "a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun."

Lin echoed those sentiments earlier this month, revealing that the new film won't borrow from the 1960s television series. "The Klingons, Romulans and other species are great, but it’s time to go further," he said. "It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and species.”

Opening July 8, 2016, "Star Trek Beyond" also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and John Cho, with Idris Elba joining in an undisclosed role.
