WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice Society: World War II, now available digitally.

In the DC realm, Black Canary hasn't been done much justice over the years. She was a bit-part player in the Justice League cartoon, as well as a mentor seen in glimpses on Young Justice. It wasn't until the Birds of Prey movie that she got a bit more screen time, but that film still revolved around Harley Quinn. Come Justice Society: World War II -- while it's due to a brutal death -- Black Canary's finally turned into a badass that gets to cut loose like never before.

This Canary isn't Dinah Lance, the street-level vigilante we usually see supporting Green Arrow; it's actually her mom, Dinah Drake on Earth-1. They both have the same sonic scream powers, but in Justice Society: World War II, Canary's way more of a soldier as she's trying to help Wonder Woman, Hourman, Jay Garrick and Hawkman fight Nazis for the Allies. It comes to a head when a mysterious advisor mind-controls Aquaman to attack New York on behalf of Hitler.

The team try to stop the invasion on the surface, but with the Atlantean army and monsters from the Trench unleashed, the Society finds itself outnumbered. Still, Canary holds strong to her belief, especially as she and Hawkman have a powerful, sibling-like bond.

The two constantly look out for each other, which is why he's got no problem flying her out of danger in the Big Apple. Sadly, one of the Trench's beasts -- a mix of a flying shark and stingray -- catches up to them in the sky and impales Hawkman, sending them plummeting to the ground. Being the hero he is, he braces Black Canary in the fall, but his wound is fatal. As Hawkman dies, he urges Black Canary to keep fighting, indicating that he's now going to be reincarnated to meet Hawkgirl.

Hawkman's death pisses Canary off, and when a battalion of Aquaman's gun-toting soldiers arrive, with tears in her eyes, her shrieks totally obliterate them. At this point, Canary's had enough and she begins marching through the streets as her colleagues, such as Steve Trevor and a time-displaced Barry Allen, mop up the villains. It leads to one final showdown when the same kaiju that killed Hawkman lands, roaring for a fight.

Canary rips her mask off, letting the kaiju know it's not a hero coming for her -- it's Dinah, the woman. She screams so loud, with her powers grown exponentially by anger, that she leaves the monster in agony as its skin is torn off. Dinah damages buildings around as she disintegrates the creature, coming off like a sonic bomb and true weapon of mass destruction that levels the city block.

It's an awesome display of raw power and an emphatic statement that honestly would have looked great in live-action as she finally embraces her inner-strength through this tragedy. It's something Hawkman always wanted her to do, but sadly, it took him being slaughtered to push her to this intimidating and very scary breaking point.

Home Entertainment, Justice Society: World War II stars Stana Katic as Wonder Woman, Matt Bomer as The Flash, Elysia Rotaru as Black Canary, Chris Diamantopoulos as Steve Trevor, Omid Abtahi as Hawkman, Matthew Mercer as Hourman, Armen Taylor as Jay Garrick, Liam McIntyre as Aquaman, Ashleigh LaThrop as Iris West, Geoffrey Arend as Charles Halstead/Advisor, Keith Ferguson as Dr. Fate and Darin De Paul as Roosevelt.
