The animated movie Justice Society: World War II brings many of DC's vast catalogue of Golden Age superheroes to the forefront in their physical prime, liberating Europe from the Axis Powers. However, as Barry Allen accidentally races into World War II, the Justice Society of America is rocked by a major betrayal from within the superhero community that leads to two of the team's most prominent heroes paying the ultimate price in defense of the country: Hawkman and Steve Trevor.
After intercepting a coded, Nazi message, the team deciphers the message with the help of Doctor Fate before being directed to the Bermuda Triangle. Battling a Nazi armada in the Caribbean, the team encounters the Atlanteans rising from the depths, who introduce the Justice Society to their king Aquaman. While this meeting between the surface world and Atlantis initially goes well, Aquaman takes the Justice Society prisoner as it is revealed he is under the thrall of the Golden Age Psycho-Pirate to work alongside the Axis Powers and target the United States. And though the Justice Society is able to escape, they are forced to scramble when Atlantis launches a full-scale assault on Manhattan.
As the battle is joined in the streets of New York City, the Justice Society holds the advantage until undersea reinforcements arrive in the form of the monstrous Trench. As the fighting escalates, Hourman is gravely injured while Hawkman is mortally wounded as he attempts to transport Black Canary to safety in the face of the undersea onslaught. Hawkman's help motivates Canary to fully unleash the powers of her sonic Canary Cry and turn the tide of battle, bolstered by additional heroes arriving in Manhattan to continue to drive the invaders back into the ocean. However, the Justice Society endures one more major casualty before victory can be secured and it's an especially devastating one for Wonder Woman.
Though Psycho-Pirate's control over Aquaman is broken and the Atlantean ruler calls his forces back to the watery depths in shame over being manipulated into an unnecessary conflict, the mind-controlling supervillain is not content in defeat just yet. Psycho-Pirate stabs Steve with an Atlantean trident before calling in an airstrike of Nazi bombers over New York. As Barry takes down Psycho-Pirate for good, the Golden Age Superman stops the incoming Nazi squadron, but the damage has been done to Steve, with the brave soldier dying in Wonder Woman's arms.
For the entire film, Steve had repeatedly tried to convince Wonder Woman to marry him, but Diana Prince's own reluctance and her commitment to seeing the war through to its conclusion led to her constantly turning him down. With Steve dying, her true feelings come through too late just as Canary's own dynamic with Hawkman suffers a grave tragedy of its own. The day is saved and an all-out invasion of the United States is averted but at a steep cost to the Justice Society. And while Aquaman is back on the side of the heroes, his restoration led to the Justice Society's biggest losses yet.
