The Justice Society of America is comics' oldest superhero team. Formed by the greatest heroes of the Golden Age, they've faced down some of the most dangerous threats the DC Universe has to offer. Over the years, the team has went through many permutations and in recent years combines the surviving heroes of the Golden Age with the legacy heroes that the team inspired over the years.

The Justice Society always consisted of a lot of powerful heroes, but with the expansion of the roster, they've added even more power to the team, making them one of the most formidable teams in all of comics.

10 Stargirl

Stargirl quickly became one of the best new members of the JSA after the joining the team. Armed with the Cosmic Converter Belt, which enhanced her physical abilities; and the Cosmic Rod, a powerful weapon that allows her to fly and fire powerful energy blasts; she proved herself one of the best heroes of her generation.

A fast learner, she would quickly rise to prominence on the team, trusted by her older teammates and looked up to the ones who were her age. Her weapons and skills made her a huge asset in combat and she was one of the most reliable members of the team in a fight.

9 Hawkman

Hawkman From DC

One of the founding members of the team, Hawkman has been reincarnating throughout space and time, trying to make up for the horrors and atrocities he committed as Ktar, leader of the Deathbringers. Armed with a harness made of Nth metal, wings, and a variety of weapons, including a mace made of the Nth metal, Hawkman is a formidable combatant.

Exposure to Nth metal has given him super strength, resistance to injury and a healing factor, and the ability to fly. His millennia of experience in battle make him the most formidable hand to hand combatant on the team.

8 Atom-Smasher

Atom Smasher from Justice Society of America

Atom-Smasher was the godson of Golden Age JSA member the Atom. His powers, super strength and the ability to grow in size, came from his villainous grandfather, Cyclotron. Starting his superhero career as Nuklon with Infinity, Inc., the team composed of JSA legacy heroes, he would join the Justice League for a time before changing his name to Atom-Smasher in honor of godfather and joining the JSA.

His super strength and growth abilities made him one of the formidable members of the team. He would suffer some personal setbacks during his time with the team, even leaving for a time to help Black Adam take back his home country, but he was welcomed back and became one of the team's best weapons in battle.

7 The Flash

Jay Garrick First Flash

Jay Garrick was the original Flash, starting one of the most venerable superhero legacies in comics. The Flash would team up with the JSA at the beginning of this career and go on to become one of the team's most important members. His speed powers came from his metahuman gene, activated by a college experiment with hard water but he would also tap into the Speed Force, the extra-dimensional source of the powers of the Flashes.

Garrick isn't as fast as some of the latter day Flashes but his super speed makes him quite formidable. That, combined with his experience and level head in combat, has made him one of the team's most valuable members.

6 Green Lantern

Unlike the Green Lanterns of latter years, the Golden Age Green Lantern's power weren't granted to him by the alien Guardians of the Universe. Rather, it was the Starheart, a powerful energy source that took the form of a green lantern and ring. Alan Scott would use his powers as one of the heavy hitters of the JSA, often being the team's biggest difference maker.

His powers are pretty much the same as the other Green Lanterns of the DCU with the added bonus of the Starheart and its energy keeping him young and vital, becoming a part of him. One of the leaders of the team, he's proven just how powerful he is in his long superhero career.

5 Power Girl

Power Girl is the pre-Crisis Earth-2 version of Supergirl. After the Crisis, she would be folded into the new universe but her origin woes would make her feel like an outsider— she never knew where she belonged. She found her calling as a member of the JSA and brought a lot of muscle to the team as well, what with her being Kryptonian and all.

While not as powerful as Superman, Power Girl is still a very tough cookie. Her powers are only part of it; she's not the kind of person to ever shy from a fight and has long enjoyed battling the worst foes, as it was something that she felt gave purpose to a life that seemed aimless and empty for years.

4 Jakeem Thunder

Jakeem Thunder was given a special pen by former JSA member Johnny Thunder, who was suffering from Alzheimer's. The pen would contain the Thunderbolt, a powerful genie. Jakeem could summon him by clicking the pen and saying the words, "So cool." Eventually, Johnny himself would bond with the genie, getting cured of his disease and hanging out with his friends.

The Thunderbolt could do just about anything but only if Jakeem asked, which enemies of the team have taken advantage of in the past. So, while technically one of the most powerful members of the team, Jakeem wasn't always able to use his powers to their utmost extent.

3 Black Adam

Black Adam was once the greatest hero of ancient Egypt. Awakened in the present by a villainous ancestor, he would eventually break free of his control and embrace heroism again, albeit an older, more violent sort than most heroes were comfortable with. Joining up with the JSA, he and his teammates would clash ideologically before he left the group to free his home country of Kahndaq in a rather brutal fashion.

Black Adam has all of the same powers as Shazam, except his were supplied by the Egyptian gods, not the Greek ones. This made him one of the most powerful members of the team during his tenure and would later rank him among their most powerful foes.

2 Dr. Fate

Archeologist Kent Nelson discovered the Helmet of Fate on a dig. Putting it on, he would gain the power and knowledge of the Lord of Order, Nabu. Together, the two beings would become Dr. Fate, one of the most powerful sorcerers in the DC Universe. Over the years, the Helmet would pass through many hands but Nelson was always the most popular and powerful.

Dr. Fate was always one of the most powerful members of the JSA, regardless of who wore the Helmet. With the power and knowledge of Nabu backing Fate up, there were few threats that he couldn't beat and he was able to help the team defeat some of the most dangerous threats around.

1 The Spectre

DC_Ghosts-Spectre

The Angel of God's Vengeance, the Spectre is easily the most powerful beings to be a member of the JSA and possibly one of the most powerful beings to ever be on a team in the DC Universe. Devoted to taking revenge against those who hurt the innocent, the Spectre can do just about anything to accomplish his mission, altering reality as he sees fit so he can avenge those who couldn't save themselves.

The Spectre was able to singlehandedly hold back the Anti-Monitor, the most powerful villain the heroes of the DC Universe ever faced. His powers make him one of the most formidable beings around, able to do just about anything to triumph in his battle against evil.
