Justice League director Zack Snyder has shared new details and unused images from the film, providing a good indication of what happened to Steppenwolf in his version of the movie's climactic final battle.

In a post on his Vero account, Snyder wrote, "Not sure how they killed Steppenwolf in the theatrical version of JL this was never finished all the way but I use Gods to kill Gods." He then added more details in a comment, saying, "His severed head rolls to Darkseid [sic] feet." The images, which you can see below, seem to indicate Wonder Woman would have used her sword to decapitate the villain, and there are no other gods among the Justice League. This also confirms Darkseid would have made an appearance at the end while indicating Snyder has not, in fact, seen the theatrical cut of Justice League.

In the theatrical cut of the film, Cyborg and Superman succeed at deactivating Steppenwolf's Mother Boxes. The villain flies into a panic, which causes Parademons to attack him and drag him off planet, presumably to his death.

After an infamously troubled production process, Snyder left Justice League after a family tragedy. Director Joss Whedon was reportedly called in to complete reshoots that gave the film a lighter tone, and rumors of a Snyder cut of the film quickly began gaining traction online. Several people involved with the production, including Snyder himself, have also publicly discussed the Snyder cut, which is supposedly more in line with the director's original vision for the film.

Justice League ultimately earned disappointing box office totals and was met with mixed critical reviews. Snyder's aborted sequel to the film, Justice League 2, was originally supposed to release this year.

Next up for the DC Extended Universe is Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), slated for release Feb. 7, 2020; Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984, coming June 5 2020; James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, which arrives August 6, 2021; and Matt Reeves' solo Batman film, which will swing into theaters June 25, 2021.
