When it came to adapting Superman's iconic black suit from the comics, Justice League director Zack Snyder said he received resistance from Warner Bros.

Snyder spoke to IGN at length about his upcoming four-hour cut of Justice League which will finally see his vision brought to life on HBO Max this month. Over the course of the wide-ranging chat, he revealed that giving the Man of Steel the fan-favorite black-and-silver costume was no easy feat thanks to push-back from Warner Bros.

"I was a big advocate [of the black suit]. They were not so much, and we would go back and forth," Snyder said. "I said, 'Okay, let me just at least do some tests to see if I could put him in the black suit and what it would look like.' We devised a method in which we could easily turn the suit, using the existing suit to the black and silver suit that you see in the movie. We knew exactly how to do it when we went into it and, as I say, it was always my intention to have him in that suit and it's glorious he's in that."

In the end, the black suit was included, and Snyder was overjoyed to see it realized. "It was cool, yeah, I got to admit, because the first thing we did was a quick test to make sure that we had all our ducks in a row. Just seeing it, we all just sat back like, wow, are we really doing this?"

When Superman was killed by Doomsday in the comics, he eventually returned wearing an all-black suit -- and sporting a '90s-appropriate mullet. It was a striking look, one fans have been hoping to see in a movie for a long time. With Superman's death at the hands of Doomsday in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the perfect opportunity was created, one Snyder seized on to bring the comic nod to life in Justice League. And it's far from the only reference to the source material in the film.

"There’s a million Easter eggs [in the Mother Box sequence]," Snyder said of just one key moment in the movie. "We just all started doodling and it became this fine art piece on its own that really talks about the Mother Boxes and the characters’ origins, and I find it really beautiful and immersive, and yeah, it’s super fun."
