While Zack Snyder's Justice League will feature elements not seen in the theatrical version, Jared Leto's Joker will be the only deviation from the director's original vision.
Variety debuted the first look at the new Joker in Snyder's Justice League cut. Surprisingly, the character looks quite different from his appearance in 2016's Suicide Squad. Gone are the tattoos and stylish wardrobe. Instead, the Joker appears in a bloodied smock, looking like a butcher. According to the story, this was very intentional. Snyder apparently always wanted Batman and the Joker to face off. So when it came time to return to Justice League, he asked to shoot additional scenes adding in the villain. The one caveat was that this Joker had to be unique. Though Leto will once again play the rogue, his look and demeanor will be completely different.
Though Snyder never got to bring together the enemies in a Batman film, the new scenes will finally let him bring together the Clown Prince of Crime and the Dark Knight. "It's Joker analyzing Batman about who he is and what he is," said Snyder. "That’s the thing I also felt like fans deserved from the DC Universe. That is to say, the Jared Leto Joker and the Ben Affleck Batman, they never really got together. It seemed uncool to me that we would make it all the way through this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together."
The four-hour-long Justice League will feature characters and plots not seen in Joss Whedon's version, but all of the elements will be part of Snyder's original plan for the film. So while Darkseid, Martian Manhunter and more will debut when the film hits HBO Max, Leto's Joker and his confrontation with Bruce Wayne will be a true product of this unusual director's cut.
