WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wonder Twins #12 by Mark Russell, Stephen Byrne and Dave Sharpe, on sale now.

The Justice League has always had a lot of members and many of them have received different promotions and roles within the group over the years. But only a handful of them gets their own department within the team that's completely of their own to manage. The Wonder Twins had already been working for the Justice League but now, in Wonder Twins #12, they've gotten their own department in the superhero organization alongside their friends, the Maths.

CALLING OUT THE LEAGUE

The Justice League initially bring in the Wonder Twins (who have been serving as interns at the Hall of Justice) to confront them over their recent actions. They broke Polly Math out of juvie, stole a spaceship by kidnapping Lex Luthor, and broke open the Phantom Zone to free her father Filo. The League is overtly concerned that the Wonder Twins were willing to quickly break protocol and work with apparent criminals to accomplish their goals.

But Jayna stands up to the Justice League, telling Superman and the rest of the heroes that while the Justice League would have been too busy to save lives as they did. Frustrated with all the problems in Earth culture, she calls out the entire Justice League for their inability to do more to help the world. Jayna even leaves the team speechless when she brings up that saving the world is supposed to be their job.

Instead of getting mad though, Superman and the other heroes take what she said to heart. So, the Justice League decides that the Wonder Twins have proven their commitment and skills, and decide to push them in a new (and hopefully helpful) direction.

ASTERISK

When the Wonder Twins return to the Hall of Justice next, they're greeted by the Justice League -- who have also caught Polly and her father. But instead of tearing into them, the teens receive plenty of recognition for saving the world in a way that the Justice League couldn't. Superman says the group now understands that sometimes, you need different perspectives to approach different problems.

To that end, the Justice League has established a new department: ASTRISK, which stands for Assessing Strategic Threats Requiring Innovative Skills and Knowledge. The organization will be run by the Wonder Twins and the Maths going forward, and will tackle problems that can't be solved by just punching.

It's a good idea for the League going forward. The Maths bring a great deal of intelligence to the table, while the Wonder Twins have empathy and connection with the world, as well as the strength of heart to stand up to the Justice League when they know they need to. By working together and trying to improve the world instead of repeating the same processes that led to the troubled world we have, maybe the Justice League (and ASTRISK) can save lives they otherwise may not have been able to. The Issue ends with the Wonder Twins and the Maths working together to protect the world as official members of the Justice League think-tank.

This gives the Wonder Twins a new and seemingly permanent role within the heroic structure of the Justice League. They could easily appear as assistance for any of the various heroes within the Justice League, providing technical support and new ideas for any of the heroes who come to them for assistance.
